EPA posts 2009 VW TDI fuel economy numbers

Posted By on May 21, 2008

EPA numbersThe U.S. Department of Energy‘s FuelEconomy website has updated numbers posted for the ‘soon to be released’ (summer 2008) Volkswagen Jetta and Sportswagen TDI clean diesels. The new fuel use numbers show miles per gallon economy for the six-speed manual version at 30 city, 41 highway and at 34 combined. The DSG automatic transmission are nearly as efficient at just a single MPG lower for each number. As the acronym often states … YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary), but I suspect that many TDI buyers will comfortably see better economy from these new TDIs. (drivers of the test vehicles have noted 50 mpg on highway loops)

    Cool. The numbers seem low?

I was going to say the same. The numbers seem low. By that I mean, I have a calibrated ScanGauge II and my numbers commuting to/from work on my ’06 TDI have been between 57-61mpg. I realize my commute is fairly smooth with a lot of back road, but the EPA estimates seem significantly lower than they were on the sticker when I bought mine.

I have a golf 2005,w/manuel transmission and have 71k on odometer, my average tank of fuel will get me 600 miles or about 45 mpg. Thoroughly satisfied with the car, bought used from private party in Sept 2007 for 15k, was a one owner.

My apology Russ for not detecting your comment until the weekend. I suspect that we’ll see numbers closer to 50 mpg highway if current demo runs by those who have been driving the pre-release TDI here in the U.S. I’m impressed with Scott’s 2006 TDI numbers … they are exceptionally high. (certainly not the norm)

This is the time of year my car does best. The winter snow tires are off, the fuel is no longer a winter blend, and I don’t need air conditioning (but will soon…). As I mentioned, my ~50 mile commute is pretty smooth with only a few stop lights and stops/turns every few miles. I think it is on the far end of the bell curve of driving conditions.

When I balance it against short trips taken around town to run errands, the tank average is around 50mpg.

As others have sarcastically joked on TDI forums, the ScanGauge steals all of your horsepower. ;-) (ie. you become less of a lead foot)

Hmm … so you’re using the ScanGauge purposely to monitor your driving style? Does it monitor or dial back what power you actually have?

Nope, it’s purely an awareness thing. Like buying a Kill-A-Watt for your home. After a few months of using it, you start to get more of a feel for where you waste gas needlessly.
