We have decided to give up on planting flowers in the half-moon

For years we have had on and off success in planting flowers in our “difficult” half-moon planting area … with more failures than success in recent years. We are still unsure of what might be the problem?
I’ve worked the soil numerous times. I’ve composted, added fresh soil, till it regularly, fertilized and used bags of manure over the years. Nothing seems to make a real difference. For a while we thought it might be that it flooded with too much rain and not enough drainage. Other times it seems as if it bakes in the sun and gets too hot and dry.
This year Brenda has been focused on watering and even planted some of the flowers in pots to compare … the ones below are growing and looking great. Those in the half-moon planting area are pitiful.
Next year it will be pots only as it seems like a waste of money to try again.
