Avast! Antivirus, Revo Uninstaller and my WordPress install

avastscanreport

I’ve been happily using Avast! as my virus scanner for the last couple years … and have been off and on satisfied for over a decade. The company updates always get me concerned knowing that the free version could become as bloated as are many others (paid versions aren’t immune either). Thankfully the most recent update merely added links to offsite reports which eases concern that the sites I visit are relatively safe and that my computer is being protected. Resident virus protection aside, it is a good idea to scan your hard drive with other software and occasionally deep clean browser and program bits and piece … check out Revo Uninstaller.

mdb_dec2011trafficBesides keeping a personal computer clean and running at it best speed, I’m finally satisfied with the WordPress install on the new server. Speeds have been good since I figure out the problem with the Redirection log … and traffic is climbing back to close to where it was prior to changing from richc.myarchive.us to richcorbett.us the new domain – MyDesultoryBlog.com. Markets rise and lift “almost” all boats – Santa Claus rally?

marketsup111220A very positive day for a broad swath of Wall Street and U.S. based companies. The stock market saw trading return the Dow Jones Industrial Average back over the psychologically challenging 12,000 mark.

Those watching the ups and downs realize that one day up 300+ points doesn’t mean all that much … especially when considering the year’s volatility. Still for those who’s jobs depend on how investments close out the year, this is good news.

NEW YORK—U.S. stocks rallied as domestic home building jumped to the highest level in nearly two years and another successful Spanish debt auction buoyed investor sentiment. LINK

The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 337.32 points, or 2.87%, to 12103.58 in light “close to the holidays” trading on Tuesday. The Nasdaq was up 35.95 or 2.98% to 1241.30 and S&P 500 even better closing up 3.19% to 2603.73.

Miami Redhawks equipment manager warms up with the team

Brenda and I are enjoying the evenings with our son Taylor who is home from college for Christmas break. He shared a few stories and a cute video from the Miami University (OH) football field that was shown on Sportscenter. The somewhat viral YouTube video (at least on campus) made by the student film team highlighting “Chad in equipment, who dances during warm ups.”

Bi-Lo buys Winn-Dixie and takes them private

Posted By on December 19, 2011

For those living south of the Mason-Dixon line, a big winndixiemerger occurred today with the grocery chain Bi-Lo purchasing the larger Winn-Dixie Stores for $560 million. (link) The smaller privately own company purchased the 480 store Winn-Dixie chain and included 380 pharmacies as well. The news bump the share price up 70% with the $9.50/share cash price. The combined company will cover eight states and have about 690 stores  with 63,000 workers and existing Winn-Dixie store will retain their name due to strong name recognition.

"With no overlap in our markets, the combined company will have a perfect geographic fit that will create a stronger platform from which to provide our customers great products at a great value, while continuing to offer exceptional service," said Bi-Lo Chairman Randall Onstead.

Winn-Dixie’s board has unanimously approved the deal, which is expected to close in the next 60 to 120 days.

The management structure and headquarters location have yet to be determined, but the companies anticipate keeping locations in both Greenville, S.C. and Jacksonville, Fla.

Winn-Dixie emerged from bankruptcy protection in 2006. In its most recent quarter, Winn-Dixie’s revenues rose 3 percent, yet the company posted a loss of about $24 million.

Shares rose $3.79 to $9.22 in early trading.

Home for Christmas and making his parent dinner

Posted By on December 18, 2011

tcooking111217It doesn’t get much better than this … our son Taylor is home from college for Christmas break and after living off campus decided to make dinner for his parents. What a treat to know that he can cook well enough to take care of himself and enjoys making dinner for us. In appreciation I was happy to clean up. (note: upon visits to his house realized it wasn’t as stellar as his cooking.)

New York obviously does not embrace the Second Amendment

Posted By on December 16, 2011

glock27incaseI never realized just how restrictive New York firearm laws were until reading this story. It never occurred to me that transporting a pistol in a locked case could be a class C felony, even in a liberal state like New York? I suppose if someone spends their life living under NY restrictions … as did my wife … its no wonder they have difficulty comprehending the personal liberties that exist in states respecting Second Amendment rights.

It has taken this story to hammer home how different gun laws can be in different states. (note highlighted text below)

Tea Party Patriots co-founder Mark Meckler was arrested at an airport in New York City on Thursday after he attempted to check-in a locked gun box holding his Glock 27 pistol and ammunition to a Delta Airlines ticket agent.

According to authorities and his attorney, Meckler, 49, holds a concealed-carry permit for the Glock 27 pistol at home in California, but not in New York where he was attempting to board the plane. As a result, he was arrested and charged with a felony.

“Before leaving home, passengers should acquaint themselves with the weapon laws of the jurisdiction that they are visiting and comply with any and all legal requirements if they choose to travel with a weapon,” Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said.

“Otherwise, they may find themselves being arrested and charged with a felony – as is what occurred in this case,” he said.

Attorney Brian Stapleton of Goldberg, Segalla, LLP said Meckler was only attempting to follow TSA rules for checking in a firearm when he was arrested.

“While in temporary transit through the state of New York in possession of an unloaded, lawful firearm that was locked in a TSA-approved safe, he legally declared his possession of the firearm in his checked baggage at the ticket counter as required by law and in a manner approved by TSA and the airline, yet was arrested by port authority for said possession,” Stapleton said.

Meckler was arraigned Thursday in Queens Criminal Court and charged with second degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Class C felony.

Mitt Romney for President is just fine with me

Posted By on December 15, 2011

Well I was going to wait until closer to the Republican primary in Ohio (3/6/2012) to decide which candidate was best to run against the president, but after seeing recent polling, the candidate is obvious. When polls pitting Newt Gingrich against the sitting President Obama, the numbers indicate the President may have an easy re-election, in that case the only real option for the GOP is Mitt Romney … and personally, that’s fine with me (my reasons below).

polls_obamagingrich111214

First, Mitt Romney’s character is about as solid as they come for politicians. It wouldn’t be appropriate to say that his integrity is on the level of a Washington or Lincoln, but his moral compass is intact. No one has characterized him as corrupt or questioned his devotion to family, faith or country … therefore in my eyes he is way ahead of most others seeking office.

mittromneyheadshotHe also has demonstrated that he understands both the economy and American business … and government’s place in a free society. Besides growing up in a business family, he has managed businesses as well as asked to help salvage the 2002 Olympics. He has also functioned at a Republican governor of the liberal state of Massachusetts. This executive branch position required far more tact and negotiation with an opposing party than governing in a one party controlled state. His ability to function and get work done may be useful in Washington DC considering what we’ve seen in the past two administrations.

How does Mitt Romney propose dealing with our #1 issue, the economy? According to what I absorbed from his 59 point plan, he would start by making the U.S. business friendly. His sharp criticism of China for currency manipulation may not gain traction since no one wants a trade war, but his push to lower the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 25 percent would put the United States in a more competitive position. Romney want to streamline much of the business red tape which will not only help corporations, but small businesses which have become the growth energycomparison1engine of our nation. Speaking of red tape, he also proposes to dismantle much of Dodd-Franks, something that will make business more competitive and make more capital available. U.S. jobs here is better than companies sending them overseas.

Energy continues to dog our country as well. Although I’m anxious for day we are less reliant on fossil fuel, there is no denying that we suffer economically if our energy cost is artificially higher because of unrealistic policies. The rotation from oil and coal in the U.S. is a great goal, but not at the expense of our citizens and businesses. We need to continue to use all sources of energy and let them compete with each other without picking winners and losers from Washington DC. Romney position is to allow oil drilling “wherever it can be done safely.” His plan is to “fast-track the process for approving energy permits, and streamline the approval of new nuclear reactors.”

Romney has also pledged to keep taxes where they are today by making the Bush-era/Obama temporary renewal rates permanent. As a way to address retirement saving shortfalls, spendmorethanwetakeinhe also plans to eliminate double taxation policy of the estate tax and zero out the capital gains taxes for those with incomes below $200,000 (Millionaires need not apply). His eventually goal … probably a pipe dream … is to eventually reform the tax code by simplification and flattening the rates – fairer.

A touchy subject is of course is how to best deal with Medicare and Social Security. Although I haven’t figured out where he comes in on Medicare (his Obamacare problem, perhaps?), he has suggested that he would be considering raising the retirement age and reducing benefits to wealthier retirees in order to preserve the current Social Security program. The shared pain approach is realistically the only way forward since everyone knows we can’t continue without change.

cutthespending

As for the Tea Party movements hot button issue of Obama’s sweeping healthcare reform, Romney said he would repeal it. One can only go on his word that he believe states have that right, but not the federal government. If change needs to be implemented in order to control cost and assure all Americans get care, a state based solution may be the right step? One of the areas of healthcare he want to address (left out of even the all encompassing Obamacare) is medical malpractice lawsuits. Romney wants to rein in medical malpractice lawsuits and other types of litigation that cost companies billions of dollars and often drive up prices, but he many not have much impact since his position is that these decisions should be at the state levels.

Foreign policy may be Romney’s Achilles heel in that he has yet to be exposed to decisions that can all consume a president. Personally the security of our country was my biggest fear with President Obama, but thankfully he rose to the occasion. On the other hand, having bright advisors and good judgment may be more important than having a little bit of personal experience? In reading Mitt Romney’s white paper makes me realize the depth of planning he already has in place and that he has already shown the kind of executive level of leadership required to put together a Whitehouse. America could (and has these past 3+ years) have a less qualified leader serving as our president.
