Music Monday: George Strait and “Check Yes or No”

Occasionally I switch my normal 1970s music listening to something with a little more country music flavor. Usually this doesn’t mean going to a straight country music station (or channel as it is listed on SiriusXM), but to a favorite Kenny Chesney channel. 😉
The 1995 George Strait song “Check Yes or No” came on and decided it would be perfect for my mood this week. Yes, he has been mentioned a couple of times before, but not this week’s Music Monday tune.

George Strait’s “Check Yes or No” is a country music classic released in September 1995 as the lead single from his box set Strait Out of the Box. The song, written by Danny Wells and Dana Hunt Black, became a number-one hit on both the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs and the Canadian RPM country charts, where it spent four weeks at the top.
The song tells a heartfelt story of a childhood romance that blossoms into a lasting marriage, beginning with a schoolyard crush and evolving into a lifelong love. The lyrics follow a narrator recalling his first love, Emmylou Hayes, from third grade, and celebrating their enduring relationship two decades later.
It was a major award-winning success, earning CMA and ACM awards for Single of the Year in 1996. The track remains one of Strait’s most iconic songs, still widely played on country radio and beloved by fans. It has been covered by artists including Scotty McCreery, Kane Brown, and Austin Mahone.
The song was recorded on April 10, 1995, at Emerald Sound Studios in Nashville, and was a favorite of Strait’s son, Bubba, who reportedly helped inspire its emotional impact.
