My summary of the 3rd presidential debate at Lynn University

Posted By on October 24, 2012

The final presidential debate was held at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida on Monday night (a college visit there in 2007) and the sit down face-to-face capped off the campaign season – I don’t think most Americans could take any more. I personally found it interesting, but assume most were bored with the foreign policy content by the reactions on Twitter. romneyobamaaniI have found it entertaining to follow the social networks instant response as well as chiming in. Some of the comments seemed a bit  nit-picky regarding verbiage and intent. To be fair when thinking about Middle East policies, President Obama faced the same challenges all previous presidents have faced regarding seeking peace between these countries. Failure on his part was probably a foregone conclusion … and frankly I don’t expect that another 4 years will make much difference OR will consume all that much time in a Romney administration … but we can always hope. On the other hand, Obama’s policies definitely haven’t improved the situation or America’s influence or standing; in fact, his policies may have weakened our image. Certainly there are a few more Arab countries thumbing their noses at us. I’m of the position that we are better off addressing Arab political parties with firmness and operate in a “peace through strength” philosophy – be the authority who has clean rules of behavior with consequences rather than trying to be liked.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney initially challenged President Barack Obama’s foreign policy saying the president has failed to come up with a coherent policy to grapple with the “rising tide of chaos” in the Middle East in the wake of the Arab Spring. President Obama was just as critical of Romney’s proposed policies, telling his rival “every time you’ve offered an opinion, you’ve been wrong,” to which the response was, “Attacking me is not an agenda” for dealing with a dangerous world.

Far right supporters were critical of their guy for not hammering Obama on his handling of Libya, or mishandling as the case may be. Romney addressed it gingerly and didn’t hammer home that it was a “terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, which left four Americans dead,” not a reaction to a YouTube tape … a position kept alive by the Obama administration. Far left supporters of the President are still clinging to the offensive video as reasoning for the attack, long after even the President himself acknowledged the killings as planned and organized terrorism.

debateatlynnuniversity

Mr. Obama did his part to continue the narrative that Romney would go back to previous administrations (a reoccurring “Bush’s fault” theme),  and pointed to Governor Romney stating that Russia is the United States’ number 1 geopolitical foe.

“Governor, when it comes to our foreign policy you seem to want the policies of the 1980s, just like you want to import the social policies of the 1950s and the economic policies in the 1920s.”

Some suggested the more laid back Romney seemed to be a strategy of someone who was in the lead … that or he may have been courting votes from single women? There were several occasions where Romney politely agreed with Obama.  He approved of sanctions against Iran and suggested that they are an appropriate action, but said he would implement even tougher sanctions. He praise the leadership in sending the SEALS in to kill Bin Laden, but pointed out how as president, Mr. Obama did not even visit our strongest middle east ally, Israel.

”You skipped Israel, our closest friend in the region …”

“If I’m president of the United States — when I’m president of the United States — we will stand by Israel. And if Israel is attacked, we have their back.”

The final debate topic was on China. Romney said he would label the country a “currency manipulator” on day one of his term as president.   Obama using different language insisted that the country “play by the same set of rules.” Once again, there were no detailed plans or reasons why this wasn’t address during the last 4 years. Obama continued his attack and accused Romney of investing in Chinese companies and closed the night suggesting that a Romney administration would bring the same policies that sent the U.S. head-first into two prolonged wars, record deficits and an economic crisis.

Romney for his part went positive saying:

“I’m excited about our prospects as a nation … we have an opportunity to have real leadership. The president’s path means 20 million people out of work, a struggling economy and a soon-to-be $20 trillion national debt.”

Now that the 2012 debates are over, it is left to the voters … well at least the ones in the battleground states. The polls show Romney with a slight national popular vote lead, but those reading the “too close to call states” … Ohio one of the biggest, suggest that we are nearly dead even. I’m holding my breath.

Apple refreshes line of Macs and introduces the iPad Mini

Watching the Apple news trickle in this Tuesday afternoon after munching down my small but FREE piece of pizza from Dominos (National Sampling Day) … and that’s a lot cheaper than the starting price of $329 for the 7.9” iPad Mini. Price aside, it looks like another great Apple product and leave a little room for competitor to continue to nibble away with their 7” tablets.

appleipadandmini

The iPad mini comes with a dual-core Apple A5 processor, LTE, a 5-megapixel iSight camera, 802.11n Wi-Fi, the new Lightning connector, and a claimed 10-hour battery life. "It is every inch an iPad," summarizes Phil. You can buy the iPad mini in black or white.

It also will offer an LTE option that wireless carriers will be sure to appreciate $$$.

Weekend round up and a Bengal loss to the Steelers … again

Posted By on October 22, 2012

I planned visiting my mom and home projects (and football watching) perfectly around the weather this past weekend. Saturday was a bit gloomy with a few sprinkles for my nursing home visit with my mom. She is doing pretty well considering she is being turned every couple hours and bedridden. Her mind is sharp and she even had her hair done this week which assumed made her feel a little better (she did complain it was painful though). I wish there was something medically that offered hope for her crumbling vertebrae and bone infection, but there aren’t any options. Next decision is whether or not to replace her pacemaker battery?

drain1_121020 drain2_121020

The second part of the weekend was “Round 3” (ding, ding, ding) with the downspouts, sump and septic drain lines; unfortunately they bengals3_3_121021have been attacked by roots and need to be cleaned out. I’ve been both digging and replacing AND roto-rooting the 4” pipes with a drain snake. It is hard to tell if I’ve done enough to correct the problem for any reasonable period of time … or if the roots will find their way back in again? Who knows, but I hope the new pipe should be okay for another few years. I’ve added a capped cleanout T-fitting that will make running a drain snake a little easier next time. All in all it was a nice Sunday afternoon weatherwise … 60s and sunny … that was until Sunday Night Football. Once again, the Pittsburgh Steelers came to town and humbled the Cincinnati Bengals – 24 – 17. Pitiful and disappointing performance by both Cincinnati coaches and players alike. Makes me want to move back to Cleveland … hmm … maybe not.

deblurringsoftware

Why is it that  I question installing and using software some pretty impressing “debluring software” from a guy named Vladimir Yuzhikov? Am I being overly paranoid or worse … prejudice.

Anyway take a look at SmartDeblur and what Gizmodo has to say about this windows only (for now) software … although with smartphones getting some powerful processors I’d be looking for this software to show up in an Android or iOS phone soon.

Tech Friday: Are you sharing your phone numbers on Facebook?

Posted By on October 19, 2012

After receiving plenty of election oriented phone calls this year, it is time to purge all my phone numbers from the public roles … something I thought I had been doing for years — obviously not!  An area overlooked my some is the increasingly popular way to share address and phone number data with contacts — Facebook(phone number, addresses, etc are often updated automatically by iOS and Android phones)

Unfortunately, this is an area that should bit more private, but really isn’t. One would think that phone numbers added to a Facebook profile would be protected based on privacy settings — but think again. According to a recent CBSMoneyWatch article, Facebook is a go-to site for phone numbers and reverse-lookup information.

… the best way to look up someone based on a phone number right now is Facebook. That shouldn’t surprise anyone based on the service’s spotty privacy record, but in this case it certainly works to your advantage if you’re looking up a phone number. Just open Facebook and enter a phone number in the search box at the top of the screen, then press Enter. If that individual has associated their phone number with their Facebook profile, they will appear as the top search result, regardless of their privacy settings and even if you are not friends.

Sealed the rear driveway and admired the fall colors

Posted By on October 18, 2012

Projects are getting done one at a time before winter arrives, but seems as soon as I can check one off the list, two more need to be done.

buringbush121017sI’ve been repairing the tiles on the pool before closing for the season and on Wednesday evening sealed the new front porch pavers since I’m in town. The last few days I’ve also taken advantage of the nice weather and started hand digging the sump pump and downspout drains and even did a 4 hour drain snake rental to try and clear the pipe; the problem was spotted when we pumped our septic tank last week. I can’t say I’m satisfied with the drains yet, but only a heavy rain will tell the whole story.

newsealbackdriveway121017sLast night while cutting the front lawn the  burning bushes were blazing and I was also surprised by all the blooming fall flowers. Another project is going to be the crumbling concrete on the front driveway … I have been pondering if it can be repaired or if it will need to be replaced (ideas?)

But today was also “seal the asphalt” day as the truck came just after I finished edging back the overgrowing grass. The guys put on two coats of sealer and lightened my wallet. It all has to do with the price of oil I’m sure … oh, and yes, our rear driveway being long!

Follow up: Is President Obama just running on fumes?

Over the lunch hour today, I reviewed a few articles and opinions regarding last night’s debate, as well as skimmed through my Twitter feed. What stood out were Romney supporters focused on the content and ideas clearly stated by Mitt Romney. He was focused on the economy and jobs which requires a direction change. This seemed in contrast to the criticism by a significant number on the left regarding Romney, but void of praise for anything presented by President Obama. I even notice several left leaning women overly focused on Governor Romney’s “binders full of women” comment, as if it was a “gotcha” moment? I’m sure it wasn’t worded eloquently, but no matter how one looks at it, the focus was still on what Mitt Romney said, not about President Obama. Do voters really want to continue the current malaise

“I think it’s pretty clear that when it comes to his policies and his answers and his agenda, he’s pretty much running on fumes,” Romney quipped, telling voters they had 20 days left to make a choice about America’s future.

Obama and Romney should have been wearing boxing gloves

Posted By on October 17, 2012

In one corner, wearing a dark suit is the undefeated President of the United States Barack Obama! [cheers and jeers] In the other corner also in a dark suit is the challenger, Salt Lake City Olympics rescuer, Governor Mitt Romney! [more cheers and jeers] Neither man wore gloves, but should have, as they at times looked to be dancing around a boxing ring. Thankfully no punches were thrown, but certainly both politicians bobbed and weaved … and took verbal jabs at every opportunity.

obamaromneydebate2_121016

For the President performance, it was like night and day compared to the first debate … the one where only his shadow showed up. Unfortunately he probably out and out lied deceived (he is the President) on the subject of the Benghazi, Libya when he claim to have designated it an act of terror on day one in the Rose Garden – that would be right before he jetted off to Las Vegas and a campaign tour (can you tell this left a bad taste with me?) If that were true, I’m not sure why the administration would have instructed the Ambassador to the UN to go out 5 days later on every Sunday television news show and indicate it was all due to a YouTube video. I don’t recall Ambassador Rice even suggesting it was a coordinated terror attack – actually, I think she denied it.  Mr. Romney on the other hand failed to land a decisive blow when he had Obama on the ropes, but the referee (moderator Candy Crowley) stepped in and rescued Mr. Obama before too much damage was done.

Romney for his shortcomings demonstrated his ability to “adapt” (a nice word for flip-flop or political change of mind) on issues from healthcare to assault weapon bans. I’m not sure what stuck considering he had a solid performance and was focused like a laser on the economy, taxes and jobs – did he say jobs? JOBS, JOBS, JOBS. Obviously it was Obama’s Achilles heel. Frankly I’m not sure that questions from the audience or moderator were necessary as both men had no problem keeping the debate going. I really can only remember a few of the nine questions: 1) helping college students with employment after graduations, 2) illegal immigrants or more appropriately “immigration policies” and 3) a fellow who voted in 2008 for Barack Obama and wanted “a reason” to give him four more years.

There may have been one “big bird” type awkward moment by Governor Romney –  primarily picked up by liberals – as he referred to interviewing women for his cabinet when he was governor of Massachusetts: Romney said he had “binders full of women” to review for their qualifications. Twitter went crazy … and suspect left leaning news organizations and stand up comedians will  expand on this later. I’m not sure how moderate women took this “hiring of women” point, as it was obvious liberal women saw it as red meat.

As for social media, I followed the debate on TV and Twitter which again was amazing. The flow of tweets was insightful and entertaining; definitely an entirely new animal when in comes to following political debates. For my part, I added to the fray (archived below).
