Obit: A Celebration of Life for my Uncle Sonny (Earl D. Corbett)

Posted By on August 10, 2023

My dad’s younger brother, my Uncle Sonny, passed away in his home on July 20, 2023. He lived a full life, had a loving family and enjoyed living on a small southern Michigan lake for much of his life. I remember him most clearly from when I was a boy as the energetic and high spirited uncle … especially when gathered at “what once was my grandparent’s cottage with an outhouse” on Posey Lake … eventually to become an actual house … and “home” for Uncle Sonny and Aunt Fran.Earl

If there are regrets in my life, one of them might be not working harder to remain closer to my father’s family as the years passed and life got busier … although suspect I am not alone with these thoughts? For now, I’m looking forward to “celebrating his life” with his family on Sunday.

Earl D. Corbett, 90, of Hudson, Michigan passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at his home on Posey Lake on July 20, 2023. He was born on October 10, 1932, in Toledo, Ohio, the son of Earl and Helen (Hirth) Corbett. He married the love of his life, Francine Sharrock, on December 8, 1952, in Toledo, Ohio.

Earl graduated from Libbey High School Class of 1950. He served in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1954. He was a pipefitter at Libbey Owens Ford Glass in Rossford, Ohio for 36 years. Earl (Sonny) was a dedicated Michigan Wolverines fan despite being surrounded by a bunch of Buckeyes! He loved watching and playing golf and was a cunning card player, fostering a love of cards and games within his family. Euchre, Cribbage and PUSH being some family favorites. Sticking by his side, or rather his lap, was his loyal Posey kitty, but don’t you dare call him a cat person! He had a contagious smile and a ferocious dedication to his family and if you weren’t a member, you quickly became one in his presence. Everyone that knew him, especially his ”Hon Pot” loved him dearly.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, wife (Fran), son (Michael Corbett) brother (Bud), and sisters (Pat and Gloria). He is survived by his daughter Candace Foley and son Marc (Kati) Corbett; daughter-in-law Janice Corbett; grandchildren, Joel (Katie) Corbett, Stephanie (Justin) Butler, Meagan Foley, Kyla (Mark) Gorey, and Shayna (Andrew) Messer; as well as eleven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Earl’s life will be held on Sunday, August 13, 2023, from 12 – 3 p.m. at the Hudson American Legion (16113 Cadmus Rd., Hudson, MI 49247). Those planning an expression of sympathy may make memorial contributions to Hospice of Lenawee County.

Don’t forget, you can’t walk on one leg. This bump goes out to you, Dad/Poppa/Sonny/Corby! GO BLUE!

You may send condolences to the family at www.andersonfuneralservices.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to Eagle-Marry Funeral Home.
