Yet another gold medal for Michael Phelps — number six for 2008 Beijing Olympics (Friday in China, Thursday night in the U.S.). Phelps currently looks unstoppable as his win in the Men’s 200 meter individual medley set another world record: 1 minute 54.23 seconds. Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh finished second in 1:56.52 to collect his third silver medal followed by American Ryan Lochte who won bronze only 30 minutes after he won gold and set a new world record in the 200 meter backstroke.

Read this story this past week and thought it was interesting … although odd. I wonder if we’ll start seeing this kind of ‘artwork’ on this side of the pond?
MADRID (Reuters) – A one euro coin has turned up in Spain bearing the face of cartoon couch potato Homer Simpson instead of that of the country’s king, a sweetshop owner told Reuters on Friday.
Jose Martinez was counting the cash in his till in the city of Aviles, northern Spain, when he came across the coin where Homer’s bald head, big eyes and big nose had replaced the serious features of King Juan Carlos.
“The coin must have been done by a professional, the work is impressive,” he told Reuters.
The comical carver had not taken his tools to the other side of the coin displaying the map of Europe. So far, no other coins of the hapless, beer-swilling oaf have been found in circulation.
“I’ve been offered 20 euros for it,” said Martinez.

Aquaman Michael Phelps is now greatest Olympic gold metal winner of all times — 11 Golds with 3 more swimming events to go in Being. It is hard to believe that at age 23, he is only 3 victories from breaking Mark Spitz’s single-Games record of seven golds, set in the Munich pool in 1972.
[re-post from wp error?]
“Phelps won the butterfly in a world record time of 1 minute, 52.03 seconds after his goggles filled with water at the start. That pulled him ahead of the nine golds of Spitz, Carl Lewis, Paavo Nurmi and Larissa Latynina on the career list of Olympic titles.
“When I was on the awards stand I started thinking about it and that’s when I started tearing up,” Phelps told reporters. “To know that I did it, at the top, with so many great athletes, to be at these Olympic Games, it’s pretty amazing.”
Phelps added to his victories in the 400 individual medley, 400 freestyle relay and 200 freestyle in Beijing. He won six gold medals in Athens four years ago.
Phelps then swam the lead-off leg as the U.S. won the 800 freestyle relay and sliced more than four seconds off the world record.”

Let’s hope this isn’t a sign of things to come. Quite a few people are now hooked on Gmail as their primary email address.

We have once again spent our evening watching NBC’s coverage of the Olympics from Beijing China. For a second night we’ve watch the impressive Michael Phelps swim, although this time as a team of four U.S. men battled the favored French 4x 100M relay swimmers. The American team had a little extra inspiration preceding Sunday night’s race, as French world record holder Alain Bernard commented that the French relay squad would “smash” the Americans. Eat crow moi ami.
The Americans “smashed” the 4x100M relay record as anchor swimmer Jason Lezak outtouch the 100M world record holder Alain Bernard of France. The last 100M leg saw Lezak nearly a full body distance behind Bernard only to dig hard to win the race for “our” guys. The U.S. team took Gold with a 3:08.24 time ahead of the French. Way to go U.S. Olympic Swim team!

Instead of renting a movie, we watched swimming (and some beach volleyball) coming from China Saturday night here, Sunday morning there. My wife being a swimmer has been looking forward to rooting for Michael Phelps, so without objection I sat politely to watch his impressive performance … as did President Bush, although he in person. Phelps, who was favored, won his first gold this 29th Olympiad in the ‘Men’s 400m Individual Medley’ breaking the world record. Lazslo Cseh of Hungary won the silver and Ryan Lochte of the U.S. the bronze. Impressive.

A little local political humor in hopes to drum up business …
😀
“Asked at a St. Louis town hall last week how people could contribute to the effort to conserve fuel, Obama said that steps such as inflating tires to the correct levels could make a difference. Republicans have seized on the comment to suggest that the advice on tires was the sum total of the energy plan put forth by Obama.” — LINK

Senator John McCain was speaking in the neighborhood next door at 7 PM Thursday night (Four Bridges in Liberty Township, OH), so when they headed out we all made fools of ourselves and waved as the Straight Talk Express bus as it drove by our back driveway … pretty cool to have someone running for President of the United States drive by your house!

Of course not all were waving in support — LINK.
