Using a Zipcar might be an attractive option for some urban-ites, particularly if their city has decent mass transit and a Zipcar.com footprint. I know a few, very few, people who live in larger metro areas and have learned to live without owning a car — although as a Midwestern suburban and rural oriented person can imagine NOT having a car. Nevertheless, a company call Zipcar was envisioned by the two founders in 1999 after seeing a ‘rent a car by the hour’ set-up in Berlin, Germany. They have set up a network of cities in the U.S., and also in London, which rent cars by the hour (or day) at a pretty competitive rate. The advantage for those living near Zipcar garage locations (major colleges for the most part) is that as a member you reserve a car online, swipe your badge and drive. There is no hassle with rental car locations or their lines, no garage problems, maintenance or even fuel fill up issues. As the Nightly Business Report video clip below demonstrates, users can even use some pretty attractive cars — not just the econo-boxes that are rented at the compact car level found at airports.
Zipcar locations in London
My thought was IF we take a trip to London and stay at a friends flat near The Tube and rail, we might want to use a Zipcar for those trips away from town?
Rick Warren, famous for his book “The Purpose Driven Life” and as pastor at Saddleback Church, was interviewed on Friday about political figures like Sen. John Edwards who recent affair was exposed. His comments on Forgiveness and Trust were excellent (below). Warren will also be moderating a “Civic Forum” with guests Senator John McCain and Senator Barack Obama Saturday August 16th from 5-7pm PST (8-10PM EST).
Rick Warren:“There’s a difference is between forgiveness and trust. And I don’t think people understood this even as far back as, say, the Clinton scandals and things like that. The Bible teaches us that forgiveness must be instant and that we are to forgive people instantly when they sin because of three reasons: first, we’ve been forgiven by God; second, resentment makes you miserable; and third you’re going to need more forgiveness in the future.
“Forgive us our debts as we forgive those who’ve trespassed against us.†So forgiveness has to be immediate but trust has to be rebuilt. Forgiveness is by grace. Trust is by works. And so if a woman’s husband is beating her and he comes back to the door and says, “Will, you forgive me?†She has to forgive him. “Yes, I forgive you.†“Will you let me back into the house?†“No, that’s another matter.â€
You have to earn that trust. All leadership is built on trust. It’s built on credibility. If you don’t have credibility, if you don’t have authenticity, if you don’t have trust, you’re not a leader even if you have the title. And the moment you lose the trust of the American public you’re no longer the leader. You may still have the title but you’re not it. It takes years to build trust and you can lose it instantly — and it takes even longer to rebuild.
John Edwards and others like him have lost the trust of America because they lied, and fundamentally beneath every affair it’s dishonesty, its deceit, its deception. They’re lying to God. They’re lying to themselves. They’re lying to their wives and they’re lying to the public. How do you trust someone who’s constantly lying? You can’t. That’s why it is a myth to say their personal life doesn’t matter. It does matter — all of leadership is built on credibility. “
Yet another gold medal for Michael Phelps — number six for 2008 Beijing Olympics (Friday in China, Thursday night in the U.S.). Phelps currently looks unstoppable as his win in the Men’s 200 meter individual medley set another world record: 1 minute 54.23 seconds. Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh finished second in 1:56.52 to collect his third silver medal followed by American Ryan Lochte who won bronze only 30 minutes after he won gold and set a new world record in the 200 meter backstroke.
Read this story this past week and thought it was interesting … although odd. I wonder if we’ll start seeing this kind of ‘artwork’ on this side of the pond?
MADRID (Reuters) – A one euro coin has turned up in Spain bearing the face of cartoon couch potato Homer Simpson instead of that of the country’s king, a sweetshop owner told Reuters on Friday.
Jose Martinez was counting the cash in his till in the city of Aviles, northern Spain, when he came across the coin where Homer’s bald head, big eyes and big nose had replaced the serious features of King Juan Carlos.
“The coin must have been done by a professional, the work is impressive,” he told Reuters.
The comical carver had not taken his tools to the other side of the coin displaying the map of Europe. So far, no other coins of the hapless, beer-swilling oaf have been found in circulation.
“I’ve been offered 20 euros for it,” said Martinez.
Aquaman Michael Phelps is now greatest Olympic gold metal winner of all times — 11 Golds with 3 more swimming events to go in Being. It is hard to believe that at age 23, he is only 3 victories from breaking Mark Spitz’s single-Games record of seven golds, set in the Munich pool in 1972.
[re-post from wp error?]
“Phelps won the butterfly in a world record time of 1 minute, 52.03 seconds after his goggles filled with water at the start. That pulled him ahead of the nine golds of Spitz, Carl Lewis, Paavo Nurmi and Larissa Latynina on the career list of Olympic titles.
“When I was on the awards stand I started thinking about it and that’s when I started tearing up,” Phelps told reporters. “To know that I did it, at the top, with so many great athletes, to be at these Olympic Games, it’s pretty amazing.”
Phelps added to his victories in the 400 individual medley, 400 freestyle relay and 200 freestyle in Beijing. He won six gold medals in Athens four years ago.
Phelps then swam the lead-off leg as the U.S. won the 800 freestyle relay and sliced more than four seconds off the world record.”

We have once again spent our evening watching NBC’s coverage of the Olympics from Beijing China. For a second night we’ve watch the impressive Michael Phelps swim, although this time as a team of four U.S. men battled the favored French 4x 100M relay swimmers. The American team had a little extra inspiration preceding Sunday night’s race, as French world record holder Alain Bernard commented that the French relay squad would “smash” the Americans. Eat crow moi ami.
The Americans “smashed” the 4x100M relay record as anchor swimmer Jason Lezak outtouch the 100M world record holder Alain Bernard of France. The last 100M leg saw Lezak nearly a full body distance behind Bernard only to dig hard to win the race for “our” guys. The U.S. team took Gold with a 3:08.24 time ahead of the French. Way to go U.S. Olympic Swim team!
Instead of renting a movie, we watched swimming (and some beach volleyball) coming from China Saturday night here, Sunday morning there. My wife being a swimmer has been looking forward to rooting for Michael Phelps, so without objection I sat politely to watch his impressive performance … as did President Bush, although he in person. Phelps, who was favored, won his first gold this 29th Olympiad in the ‘Men’s 400m Individual Medley’ breaking the world record. Lazslo Cseh of Hungary won the silver and Ryan Lochte of the U.S. the bronze. Impressive.
