Roller furling headsail tips from Sailboat-Cruising.com

Posted By on August 31, 2014

Archiving a great sailing tip from the sailboat-cruising.com website starting with a tip on how to adjust the jib sheet car when using a roller furling genoa:

roller-reefing-headsail-sheetingDeck-sweeping genoas are not wonderful on a cruising boat if you’re at all interested in what’s going on ahead; nor do they work well with furling gear unless you’re happy to move the mainsheet traveler every time you adjust the furler.
It’s a geometry thing, the jib sheet must pull equally along the foot of the sail and the leech, or the shape of the sail will be distorted.
To check if you’ve got the jib sheet traveller in the correct position to achieve this, try luffing up while watching the tell-tales in the luff:~
● if the upper tell-tales break before the lower ones, then the jib sheet car is too far forward. ● if the lower tell-tales break before the upper ones, then the jib sheet car is too far aft.
● when all tell-tales break at the same time, then you’ve got the car in the right position.

Actually here’s another tip that I need to check on before re-rigging my roller furling headsail: Avoiding Roller Reefing Foul-Ups

Sunrises and Encore projects in Florida this past week

PreSunriseHarbortown140828

The past week had me on an enjoyable but quick trip to take care of a few sailboat maintenance items in Florida. The sails were re-stitched and needed to be picked up from South Sails as well as new halyards spliced and hoisted. Unfortunately the summer sun has been hard on every exposed part … and the humidity not all that kind inside, but what can a “commuter cruiser” do?

sunriseatharbortown140828

Figured I might as well save a couple sunrise memories since they were beautiful … I need a few more.

Encore_AntiSiphonValve

While I’m archiving photos from the past week, I might as well include a couple more from future projects: 1) anti-siphon valve needs to be repaired or replaced (above) and 2) the diesel fuel tank needs to TLC and the fuel needs to be polished (cleaned and re-filtered (growth in the tank).

A third project is to address my lack of a permanent 3) LED anchor/tri-color masthead light as well as replacing the bulb in my steaming light (not shown).

What car brands are consumers satisfied or dissatisfied with?

Mercedes-Benz leads the pack in having the most satisfied customers, with only the American brand Buick making the “most satisfied” WSJ screen shot. I can’t say that “satisfied” list was a big surprise, but I was shocked that the “least satisfied” brand was Acura … according to the survey by the American Customer Satisfaction Index.

Replaced the old halyards and roller furling line

Posted By on August 28, 2014

oldjibhalyard140826I picked up the repaired sails from South Sails this week and had initial success after stitching in a nylon thimble multiple times (I’m learning) into Encore’s new jib halyard. I still have the main sail halyard to go, but hopefully it will go smoother after the practice? I noticed the old halyards were oversized for the Westerly Corsair II according to information oldjibhalyard140827derived from SailboatOwners.com – 1/2” rather than 7/16” – so for the next time I will assume 1/2” line will go through the sheaves? The old halyards had “hardened” and stiffened in the weather, something I noticed when stitching the new halyard to the old when replacing without going aloft. The rock solid core of the old halyard has me wondering if it could possibly be a premium cored low stretch line? (something to ask an expert)

The Harken roller furling gear was a little bit more straight forward although the old 3/8” line was a bear to dig out of where it is knotted at the bottom of the drum. All in all, the upgrade will may me a little bit more comfortable when attempting to furl the headsail in a strong wind.

I’ve noticed that it is also time for a bottom cleaning so I gave my DiverDown buddy Roy a call and set him up for next month. Need to get back on an every other month rotation anyway. I’m not happy with the added expense, but it sure beat hauling out and powerwashing … or getting into the brackish water and scrapping it myself.

Archive: Checking a cars recall repair up-to-date-ness

A pass-a-long link for pre-owned used car auto shoppers from my friend Tim Hunter that could be helpful:

NHTSA created a new search tool to search vehicles (newer then 15 years old) by VIN to see if they are up to date with all the recalls on the vehicle.

S.W.E.A.T. — Mike Rowe has ideas that needs to be heard

Posted By on August 25, 2014

Uncommon brilliance from a voice “for” the common man … that would be Mike Rowe. His answer to a reader Facebook post from earlier this month is worth reading.

mikeroweimageOff The Wall

Interesting conversation over on the wall. It was started by a guy called Jayson LaVictorie, who has posted a few thousand words about what’s wrong with America. He started with these observations, inspired apparently by my S.W.E.A.T. Pledge.

Jayson: “The 12 points are stupid. Corporate SHILLS don’t want you to think (critically) of how the average worker of the United States are getting screwed over by the ultra rich! They don’t want you to know that you are losing your jobs to people that are working for nothing or next to nothing! Why do they get freebies on Labor Costs, and Corporate Welfare, then bitch if the average American has to rely on Welfare? The Hypocrisy is overwhelming when it comes to the free market thought, which no one seems to follow! The free market has no room for corporate welfare!”

Hi Jayson –

Like many today, you seem to believe the poor are poor because the rich are rich. I do not share that view, not because I’m a corporate shill, but because I don’t find your arguments to be very persuasive. Name calling aside, I do not believe that I’m “shilling” for a corporation when I espouse the virtues of hard work and self-reliance. In fact, I don’t understand how anyone could argue with a straight face that such qualities should not be encouraged.

To be clear – I believe the world is a fundamentally unfair place. From what I’ve seen, it’s filled with people of unequal talents, unequal intelligence, unequal looks, unequal empathy, unequal luck, and unequal senses of humor. Some will agonize over the unfairness of all this inequity, and others will rise above their circumstances, no matter how grim. Personally, I prefer the latter group to the former. That does not mean I tolerate injustice or cruelty. I find those those qualities equally contemptible in corporations and individuals alike. But I don’t run a foundation designed to eliminate Corporate Welfare. My goals are to elevate the basic notion that hard work and personal responsibility are simple choices that we must all either reject or embrace as individuals. I believe this to be a simple truth, regardless of your race, gender, or tax-bracket.

That’s what the S.W.E.A.T. Pledge is all about. It’s not an attack on the poor or a defense of the rich – it’s an attempt to magnify the power that comes from never seeing yourself as a victim of circumstance. If you see that as a threat to your own worldview, cheer up. We live in a society where you have the freedom to rant and rave and call me all the names you wish.

Jayson: "I can’t find the original Face Book page I saw it on. Anyways, I remember reading it and thinking oh, great the guy from Dirty Jobs has a great idea on how to bring jobs back to this country. I clicked on to the posting and then I get this 12 points list. What a let down. It pretty much blames you and only you on why there are only a few jobs for everyone to scramble to get, and feed their family with."

First of all, I realize it’s disappointing to be told that you are responsible for your own happiness, but if you need comfort Jayson, look around – you’ll find it everywhere. The country is full of programs and organizations that reflect your belief that other people are responsible for whatever difficulties you might face in life. Personally, I find that philosophy to be the opposite of empowering.

Secondly, I didn’t write The SWEAT Pledge to create jobs – I wrote it because we currently have nearly four million available jobs that for whatever reason, people don’t seem to want. I talk with evil CEO’s every week who are looking to hire people that are willing to learn a truly useful trade. I assure you Jayson, the jobs are there. Maybe they’re not your idea of a dream job. Some require retraining and long hours. Others require relocating and hard work. But the jobs are real, and the opportunities to advance far better than most people realize. My scholarship fund was designed to encourage and reward people who are willing to get the necessary training to do those jobs. The SWEAT Pledge is there to differentiate mikeroweWORKS scholarships from those programs that only reward scholastic achievement, athleticism, talent, or need. I wish to reward something different. I wish to reward work ethic. That’s what I’m trying to encourage. If you believe that’s stupid, I guess I’ll just have to find a way to live with your opinion.

Jayson: "A free market economy is a market-based economy where prices for goods and services are set freely by the forces of supply and demand and are allowed to reach their point of equilibrium without intervention by government policy, and it typically entails support for highly competitive markets and private ownership of productive enterprises."

And where exactly, do you suppose this “free market” exists? Cleveland? Dallas? Los Angeles? Please. The economy is GLOBAL, Jayson. We compete with China, Germany, South Korea, and about 200 other countries that don’t give a damn about your definition of a market economy circa 1950. Wake up, man. You’re worried about corporate welfare? Fine. Me too. But do you understand that these corporations are competing with corporations in other countries that set their tariffs and trade policies and currency valuations and working standards with absolutely no concern for ours? You can blame the corporate welfare all day long, and rage against injustice and hypocrisy till you’re hoarse. But if you really want to see manufacturing return to this country, you might want to reserve some invective for the American consumer, who has made it crystal clear that the origin of a widget no longer matters. And you might want to think about what it’s going to take to fill four million jobs currently available. I humbly suggest the answer will involve the kind of work ethic embodied in my stupid Pledge.

Also – speaking of free markets, let me explain what’s happening with The mikeroweWORKS Scholarship Fund. I sell SWEAT Pledges (and all sorts of other stuff) to raise money for said fund. I also shake money out of evil corporations. Then, I then give that money away every to a particular type of person. So far, we’ve awarded millions. But – to be absolutely clear – we discriminate. And we do so without apology. Not regarding gender, or color, or weight, or looks, or intelligence, or star sign. We discriminate with respect to your willingness to work hard and learn a useful skill. I’d rather reward the right attitude, then subsidize the cost of a chip on the shoulder. To those people who have refused to sign the Pledge, I say "fine. No harm, no foul. Go find another, less discriminating b-list celebrity with a pile of money to give away. Or, better yet – go start your own Scholarship Fund, and administer the funds in whatever way you see fit."

And that’s what I’ll say to you – with respect. Seriously – why not form The Jayson LaVictorie College Fund? You could raise your own money from like-minded friends, and then write your own Pledge – one that absolves the applicant from any measure of personal responsibility. Think about it. A simple creed that helps you identify those special Americans who believe their best opportunity for success in life lies firmly in the hands of the government, the kindness of strangers, the generosity of their parents, or the munificence of the village. Anyone but the individual themselves.
Of course, if you go that way – you better have a robust endowment. You’ll have applicants lined up for miles…

Mike

PS. The current scholarship finalists have been narrowed down to 50. Their videos are due this week. http://profoundlydisconnected.com/foundation/
I’ll keep you all posted on how this round shakes out. So far, the essays have been shockingly good.

PPS. If you want to buy a SWEAT Pledge, you can get one here –http://profoundlydisconnected.com/shop/
They’re $10. Proceeds go to the mikeroweWORKS Foundation.

PPPS Jayson – say the word, and I’ll send you one for free. A treat from your favorite Corporate Shill! Either way, good luck to you.

Here’s Mike holding up his Skill & Work Ethic Aren’t Taboo (S.W.E.A.T) pledge … or read it here.

Follow Mike Rowe on Facebook … and “maybe” we rally to get him appointed or elected where his ideas can make an even bigger impact … I can’t imagine his “uncommon sense” will do much worse.

Keeping my eye on Tropical Storm Cristobal

It looks like all the weather models are keeping tropical storm Cristobal offshore which is both good for Encore as well as my travel plans … although those in, or going to, Bermuda may want to be prepared for some wind and rain.

The Way Forward: Who has the right idea? Paul Ryan?

Posted By on August 24, 2014

The stock market roars to new highs as the summer comes to an end, but investors continue pouring money into higher risk equities as if they have forgot what can happen. ByeGeorgeThis is in part due to the low yield in fixed income assets and the new indice highs have more than a few economy watchers nervous. We all know that it is time for Quantitative Easing to end and the Fed to start increasing interest rates, but can we take it?

I’m not the only one wondering if markets are getting overly rich when it comes to the reality of corporate earnings and in particular small business profitability. How much of this is  the devaluation of the dollar?

What changes have we made?

The job market still stinks; unemployment is still above 6%; long term joblessness is “way high” and too many abled bodied Americans are not participating in the anemic rebound … let alone are on a career path.  I’d be bold enough to say that the policies coming from bureaucrats with the purpose of helping our economy have actually cost taxpayers more than they have help create job and employ Americans … particularly when it comes to the working poor. Americans who struggled with debt and paying their bills pre-recession, are still struggling with debt and are now older facing retirement without the proper saving, if they have any left. Those who were fortunate to key a steady job have seen wages stagnate have trouble believing their future is bright when they watch millions of illegal immigrants flowing into the country looking for a chance to fill a workers’ shoes. College students are still facing few jobs in their field of study and have to assume that they will be carrying student debt most of their lives. For them, having extra dollars to put into retirement savings, a house or the attention getting stock market are not seeing the same bright light at the end of this recession.

My big concern is that we as a nation have become addicted to handout and borrowed money. As debt continues to mount (nearing $17.7 Trillion in debt), I’m not seeing a clear “way forward” … where’s the balanced budget, the closing of loopholes and fixing both the corporate welfare and tax code? Where’s the reeling in of government spending, big salaries and “out of whack” benefits paid to Federal workers? I’m not entirely sure our nation is going to be able to function without the IV-drip coming from the Fed? And I haven’t even thought about social issues or world affairs! Maybe I need to read “The Way Forward: Renewing the American Idea” by Paul Ryan? Stay tuned … I need to read.

The new halyards for Encore are ready for splicing

Posted By on August 23, 2014

newhalyard140821The convenient way to replace running rigging on sailboats are to purchase lines pre-made for a particular boat at places like SailboatOwners.com.  Of course that would be the “easy” way, but it does discourage upgrading shackles and thimbles or whipping and splicing your own lines. Since our Encore is strictly a cruising sailboat, the premium lines, in my opinion, would be overkill, besides just buying raw rope can save a few bucks too. Upgrading to a better grade of shackle and thimble on the other hand seems justifiable (a few bucks more for shackles vs. many more dollars for super low stretch lines). I previously decided to go with Samson’s XLS Yacht Braid for its known “handling” characteristics and reputation as a strong, low stretch rope halyard. In fact, I recall that one of my favorite non-biased publications charted (below) it attractive when looking at “stretch vs. cost”  too – Practical Sailor.

PS_stretchvscost_aug2007

Currently I have a couple simple Wichard captive pin bow shackles attaching the halyard to the sails, but am planning to upgrade my newly repaired/re-stitched mailsail’s headboard to a Wichard key pin shackle with a bar (see PDF or Full 2014 catalog). Hopefully the second-hand $18 #81434 shackle I bought on eBay will fit the headboard and  7/16” lines once I splice in the nylon thimble?
