Running a Corvette on veggie oil in The 24 Hours of LeMons

Posted By on November 2, 2012

corveggeOh my … one would think there were limits to just how low someone would go to embarrass both diesel and Corvette lovers with one modified vehicle. Obviously not as they created the CorVegge.

The builder converted one of the finest of diesel engines – cough, cough — the Oldsmobile 350 longblock to run on WVO (waste vegetable oil) for The 24 Hours of Lemons race.

Yes, you could be the next owner of a 77hp Corvette (Dyno-verified at Thunderhill). While it’s not the only diesel Corvette in existence, I’m pretty sure it’s the only one running on WVO (Waste Vegetable Oil).

It’s entered 2 events (3 if you count upcoming Chuckwalla), but we haven’t dedicated enough energy into making it flawless yet. But it’s pretty darned close. Stupid crap like adequate coolant flow and ancillary belt alignment have caused the hiccups. If I were the type of person who could stay focused on a single car and optimizing it for a full year, I would do an alignment and lower it back to normal stance, look to run a taller final drive and keep the th400 automatic (dyno says about 142 ft lbs of torque but it’s all down at 2K rpms). Maybe put a shift kit in it. Others have suggested to put a saginaw 3-spd in it.

It’s got a bunch of new parts on it like fancy brake discs, performance pads, good tires, new belts, heat exchanger to pre-heat the veggie oil, and then 6 extra wheels, Kirkey intermediate road seat, etc. Best thing about it is it’s got an Evil Genius Racing cage installed by them. I asked them to build an SCCA and NASA legal cage so the chassis could go to someone outside of LeMons and it could then get some real HP behind it. It’s not stamped yet because John says he can’t tech a car that isn’t to full SCCA spec (it needs a fuel cell and fire bottle) but he will tech it for one of the other groups after it is fully prepped.

It’s just a 1-tank system since we’re a SoCal team and cold startups on veggie oil aren’t exactly our concern. No hose-in-hose or anything like that. Just a firewall mounted heat exchanger and a second one at the fuel filter head. It seems pretty straightforward to make it a 2-tank setup (small 1-3 gallon diesel for startup and purging) but it’s far easier to drain the tank and dump a few gallons of diesel in it to warm up the engine and then just dump your veggie oil into the tank after 20 min or so. Or heck, just run it off diesel if you’re a wimp.

All indications thus far are that it’s burning ~ 4 gal/hr of veggie oil on track. We used about 3gal/hr at Buttonwillow when we were all ginger-footing it just to take 5 laps a piece in it, it’s very first outing. With a 20 gallon stock tank, you can turn 5+ hours stints.

Engine is an Olds 350 diesel. I’ve got a second 350 diesel longblock with heads removed. Needs a going through.

I understand according to the interwebs that the 350 diesel can just have the heads swapped, a gas intake manifold and carb put on, and a dizzy put where the diesel vacuum pump is and the engine becomes an 11:1 gas motor. But do your own research (don’t believe a word I’ve written, essentially). Would be a shame to undo all the diesel/veggie stuff, but the new owner can do what he/she wishes.

I’m willing to sell it as a package deal for $3500 and include a seat at the Chuckwalla season ender. Give me a $550 deposit (to cover the race expenses) and I’ll hold it for you to decide until after you’ve driven it. If you come help prep it before the race, tow it to the track for the race etc. we can talk about dropping the overall price.

If you absolutely must own it prior to the race so you can field it with your own team, we can work out a purchase price adjustment for that, too.

I’m hesitant to sell this. Especially since it hasn’t fallen into IOE consideration yet. I’m stuck this year with no IOE and I know I’m stupid for selling it prior to having given it a chance for earnest consideration. But I also realize I’m being a bit of a hypocrite for telling folks not to worry about winning and just go out and have fun yet I hunt for another IOE. The other truth is I (like Speedy) have 4 IOEs and for either of us to win another we have to do something completely earth shattering (take note: Speedy is building a friggin’ PLANE!) . I suspect if the CorVegge were fine-tuned and fielded by someone other than me or Speedy, it would get noticed again for its IOE potential.

Sharing a couple of Then and Now political comments

Posted By on November 1, 2012

bret-baier1I’ve been seeing one of the more powerful political ads appear regularly as the election inches closer and it may be the only one that grabs my attention (posted a few days ago).

Below are a couple more points that were recently shared with me by email. This first one was from Bret Baier who compared  how the New York Times reported on the economic growth numbers.

Then and Now

The New York Times seems to be changing with time when it comes to interpreting the country’s economic outlook.

This is an editorial from October 29, 1992 — quote — "President Bush smiled when he learned this week that economic growth during the third quarter reached a surprising 2.7 percent, almost twice the previous rate. But his smile shouldn’t be broad. The new figure almost certainly exaggerates the health of the economy, which continues to creep along at a painfully slow pace. Even the 2.7 figure is half the normal rate of recovery and not enough to bring down unemployment."

And then there was this from three days ago — this past Saturday, October 27 — quote — "The slow pace of the nation’s economic recovery has picked up a bit lately. In the third quarter, the economy grew at an annual rate of 2 percent, beating expectations and the 1.3 percent growth in the second quarter. Over the past year, the growth rate has been 2.3 percent. At that pace there’s enough momentum to keep unemployment — currently 7.8 percent — from getting much worse."

The second was from a nastier email (cleaned up) which highlights the egotistical trait of President Obama as he ballyhoos his self-importance when taking credit for an intelligence and military success – notice how it differs from his predecessor during the capture of Saddam Hussein.

President Obama’s speech after the killing of Osama bin Laden:

"And so shortly after taking office, I directed Leon Panetta, the Director of the CIA, to make the killing or capture of bin Laden the top priority of our war against al Qaeda, presobama_panettaeven as we continued our broader efforts to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat his network. Then, last August, I was briefed on a possible lead to bin Laden. It was far from certain, and it took many months to run this thread to ground. I met repeatedly with my national security team as we developed more information about the possibility that we had located bin Laden hiding within a compound deep inside of Pakistan . And finally, last week, I determined that we had enough intelligence to take action, and I authorized an operation to get Osama bin Laden and bring him to justice. Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan”

President George W. Bush’s speech after the capture of Saddam Hussein:

"The success of yesterday’s mission is a tribute to our men and women now serving in Iraq . presbush_troopsThe operation was based on the superb work of intelligence analysts who found the dictator’s footprints in a vast country. The operation was carried out with skill and precision by a brave fighting force. Our servicemen and women and our coalition allies have faced many dangers in the hunt for members of the fallen regime, and in their effort to bring hope and freedom to the Iraqi people. Their work continues, and so do the risks. Today, on behalf of the nation, I thank the members of our Armed Forces and congratulate them!"

Christmas catalogs a-plenty, it must be Halloween?

The campaign mailings haven’t stopped coming, yet we’re already seeing holiday catalogs filling the mailbox each day. No less than five were in the mail yesterday … and don’t even know how many political flyers? They just head for the trash or get put in my newspaper recycling pile. If I were not in the printing business,I’d be more upset about quantity of paper and ink the never get looked at – probably still fewer trees that the “dog-eared” Sears and Penny catalogs I remember as a kid. I sort of miss those.

BTW, have a safe Halloween!

Sold my back up set of Volkswagen TDI A4 Injectors

Posted By on October 31, 2012

VWA4InjectorsThis week I parted with a set of VW TDI A4 injectors that I had been holding back for my daughter’s Volkswagen Jetta 1.9 turbo diesel. A fellow TDIClub member was in need of them so decided to sell them. He is planning to put them in his WVO converted “old” New Beetle (I think to convert back to stock), so I know they’ll be put to good use. Let’s just hope that Katelyn’s car doesn’t need new injectors before she parts will it … in about TEN years! (I do still have a backup set of nozzles with only 20K on them just in case.)

The burnout is safe. Jay Leno drives the 2012 Tesla Model S

The Tesla S could be the car which convince a few more anti-EVers to give electric vehicles a second look. I’m not saying that I’m given up gas and diesel cars or hybrid options, but I can see that the future for EV is bright.

When car guys like Jay Leno can justify having an electric vehicle as a daily driver (and rumbling internal combustion car for the weekends), I could see myself driving one of these too. I’ll disagree with Jay on the “range is not really and issue with this car” comment, only because a few of us do still need to drive more than 300 miles between charges, but as the around town, this is Testa S is great if you have the money.  Oh, and the geek in me sure loves that center display – shown about halfway through the video below.

If you are in the northeastern U.S. – Brace, brace, brace

Posted By on October 29, 2012

An animation of satellite observations from Oct. 26-29, 2012 (below), bracebracebrace_floodingshows Hurricane Sandy move along the U.S. East coast and into the Mid-Atlantic and northeastern U.S. Sandy had still not made landfall by the end of this animation. This visualization was created by the NASA GOES Project at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md., using observations from NOAA’s GOES-13 satellite.

My girls were busy with wedding plans AGAIN this weekend

It sure has been nice to see my daughter on weekends the last couple of months as her residency schedule has been somewhat gentler. Unfortunately she knows it will not last and the rotations will eventually be more challenging and stressful in a couple more weeks.

She went to a wedding show near Kings Island the Brenda and they came back with a few more ideas … although it really just reinforced what they had been planning. Brenda had recently purchased some “organza” (I have no idea what that is) and pulled out her “chargers” (again, no idea) to set a sample table. All I know, is that they were having a good time and things look like they are coming together.

Millions in the northeast U.S. await Sandy

Hurricane Sandy is still hours away from coming ashore in the northeastern U.S. but the winds, waves, rains and surge are already making an impact. Officials and residents are taking no chances and predictions are triggering evacuation orders for hundreds of thousands of residents, the cancellation of more than 7,700 airline flights. Schools and mast transit systems are closing as heavy rains and flooding are expected.

The storm has already begun disrupting businesses in the northeast and many companies planning to close Monday. Even "the New York Stock Exchange said it would close its Lower Manhattan trading floor, although shares of NYSE-listed companies would continue to trade on an electronic platform.

The National Weather Service said Sandy's hurricane-force winds, which extended 175 miles out from its center Sunday, could bring power outages for millions of residents. Temperatures could drop below 30 degrees in coming days across the eastern U.S., bringing further misery to those without power. West Virginia, Kentucky and other states could get up to three feet of snow in mountain areas."

Big government and the direction of our country

Posted By on October 28, 2012

Give some serious thought about the direction you see our country going before voting in November. No offense intended towards those desiring a compassionate federal government that oversees the care of its people, but socialism is a slippery slope that we’ve seen fail throughout history … and are witnessing in Europe today.

Below is minute and a half short commentary/ad from Thomas Peterffy who immigrated to the U.S. from Hungary in 1956 and doesn’t want to see America turn from capitalism toward socialism.
