I spent the week traveling “primarily” using the new to me Apple iPad 2 as my personal computer and am working on a longer version of “my impressions” that I’ll either post tonight or Saturday. I CAN say that I now understand why the tablet niche is dominated by the iPad and have to admit that I’m sold on this gadget – although one of the shortcoming is a good WordPress blogging app (any Windows Live Writer “like” app suggestions appreciated).
On my return drive, I also had a chance to visit with my daughter who enjoyed comparing my iPad to her TouchPad. She quickly put it through the paces (used the front facing low quality camera to take a photo) and wondered why I didn’t have the Verizon service running. ($$$) Having the a 3G contract or paying for the prepaid would be nice, but the small-ish data cap of the lowest priced plan is hard to justify when tethering to my Palm Pre is relatively easy to do for those times it is not possible to use free wifi and need a mobile connection. Still, it would be nice to have a more affordable instant on option.
The data connection speed using my Sprint Palm Pre tethered to the iPad here in Cincinnati below, but Katelyn was able to stream Netflix using my Palm Pre tethered Sprint connection in Columbus as it must have been much faster???

Perhaps I’m not around musicians enough to appreciate their unique creativity when it comes to great ways to promote themselves … but Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers caught my attention with their recording sessions as they travel between gigs. A couple of my son’s talented friends might want to give the “Van Sessions” idea a try? (music video below)
The tornados in Texas this past week were about as frightening as I’ve ever seen, but thankfully warning in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area were enough to keep losses primarily to property, although reports indicated that 10 people were injured. (WSJ: http://is.gd/fyqlNu )
As expected after Southwest Airlines acquired Air Tran, they have announced a few more details.
DAYTON — Southwest Airlines will begin service from Dayton International Airport on Aug. 12 with a daily round-trip flight to Denver, the airline announced Monday. The flight to Denver International Airport will open connections to other Southwest destinations in the west, said Southwest spokeswoman Ashley Dillon. Southwest is studying what other flights it might add from Dayton, but no timetable has been set, Dillon said. Meanwhile, Southwest will continue to work with AirTran Airlines, which Southwest acquired in May and is in the process of absorbing. More: http://is.gd/MPSXfU
Although this has probably been around a few years, the NASA‘s Perpetual Ocean is as artistic as it is informative. Those who transit the oceans of the world know the power of currents … this video illustrates how prevalent ocean currents are.
My wife’s aging Toyota Rav4 has been a totally reliable car since 1998 and it is hard to complain when a part or two needs to be replaced after quarter million miles. Thankfully the little SUV was designed in a way that accessing the fan motor was pretty easy, so a few screws to remove the glove box and I had easy access to the 3 screws holding the motor in the housing. A few minutes later I check online listings and found a few replacement online … and placed an order. If all goes well Brenda will have heat and AC before the week’s end for under $50. (in part, I’m using this to test posting from the iPad via Posterous)
Minutes after OSU’s lost to Kansas 64-62, the Ohio State coaching staff contested the game believing they discovered a payola scheme which could impact the Jayhawks advancing to the National Championship game Monday. According to late reports swirling within the NCAA, officials are considering pulling Kansas from the tournament after discovering illegal corporate involvement in their basketball program.
If the Jayhawks are pulled from Monday’s game could the Ohio State Buckeyes advance and play in the championship game again UK? (updated news below the break after Sunday morning’s press conference)
Oh … by the way, this is my lame attempt at an April Fools’ Day joke. 🙂
A couple of weeks ago I posted on the rust inside an automatic icemaker and wondered why a better grade of material that could resist the rust wasn’t used inside a freezer so prone to moisture. Today the knob on our GE clothes washing machine snapped off and after inspection I wondered if perhaps it could have been a little more beefy? I’ll try to repair, but it could have been better engineered.
A small plastic clip slides into the slot around a plastic knob holding it to a brass post. This knob then controls both the twisting, pulling and pushing action to set times, cycles and to turn the machine on and off. It seems to me that expecting the fairly small amount of plastic to hold particularly the “pulling” motion year after year is asking a bit much??? I’m not sure how other manufactures design their “mechanical knobs” (as opposed to electronic), but General Electric’s Select line of washers could have used a sturdier knob, in my opinion.
For the past couple of years I’ve been taking our cars to a privately owned automotive service business (in West Chester, OH) and have been satisfied with the work. I’ve also enjoyed getting to know the owner, Tim Ellison, who’s Christian walk and straightforward business dealings are one in the same.
Besides using Mr. Godwrench to do some heavier engine repair work on Brenda’s aging Toyota Rav4 a couple of years ago, I continue to take my Honda Pilot to Tim for service when I don’t have the time or tools (the AC service comes to mind). If you live north of Cincinnati and are looking for an honest, trustworthy and fair priced automotive repair service company, consider giving Mr. Godwrench a call – 513-755-7146.
