Tech Friday: Look up unicodes with Shapecatcher.com

Posted By on January 20, 2012

logo256x256_copyI saw the Shapecatcher link highlighted on one of the technology media sites and thought it might make for a good a Tech Friday post. Yes, it has been a while since Friday has seen a technology related idea … so here’s any easy way to find the correct Unicode hexidecimal equivalent for a particular character. It might be used for foreign language characters and symbols or frequently used characters we all type.

How To:

Start by navigating to the Shapecatcher.com website, then use you mouse (I haven’t tried a phone or tablet?) to draw the character that you are looking for. Tap the “recognize” link and the database looks up several close symbols for your scribble. I’ve tried it successfully with accented foreign letters and the trademark symbol below. By drawing a TM and the Unicode hexidecimal: 0x2122 is found to be the closest match.

Video: Birch bark canoe – C’SAR ET SON CANOT D’CORCE

Could help but sharing this pretty interesting (long) video illustrating traditional Birch bark canoe building … who knew so much went into building these boats.

While thinking about good ol’ days, how about this?

Posted By on January 19, 2012

I came across the video below where a father explains LP records to his daugher and thought the old photos and shared memoies that I posted earlier … ugh,  are my 78’s that old? (that would be 78rpm records, not the year 1978!)

For the record (pun intended), the 78 records mention above were my grandparents, not actually mine but I do know about them.

Archive: Vintage 1978 memories from “the good ol’ days”

My college friend Dallas on Marco Island BEFORE it was developed – 12/1978

Who doesn’t enjoy reminiscing a little bit about “the good ol’ days” after looking through a couple of old photos? Here are a few from a trip to Florida over Christmas break back in 1978 … whoa, we were young.

dallas_g_camping588 dallas_g_earl1978

This past weekend when an old Ohio Northern University college friend’s name came across my computer – actually his wife’s – and she requested to connect by Facebook (not that I use it much). After saying yes and noting the family photo, I dug into my draw of old photos and spotted a couple which made me smile. Hmm … an archive type blog post perhaps???

guilfordfamily2011It was great to see Dallas and his family in a photo since we haven’t connected since the 1980s. It does seem like I’ve been able to connect with a couple of old friends this way like Jerry, Bill and Don my room-mates and one of my closes high school friends Charlie, so it is great to add Dallas Guilford to the archive.

For the record, the photos above were taken during one of our several road trips during Christmas break. I think I took one every year and several of them with Dallas. We eventually fixated on camping about as far south on the eastern side of Florida at dallas_rich_earl1978Collier Seminole State Park since we could drive each day to the small town of Goodland for supplies and to Marco Island for the sunshine and beach. Back in “the day” we had to use plywood sheets to drive over the soft sand trails that lead to Tiger Tail Beach … pre-housing or roads. Besides dealing with bugs and sand, the time was terrific.

I believe the trip above was our 1978 trip and we drove a Oldsmobile Starfire that Dallas named Earl – who doesn’t name their car?

Dallas is the guy who taught me car rebuilding skills as it was a way for us to own late model vehicles on the cheap.  I’ve owned several totaled vehicles purchased from wrecking yards that I was able to rebuild and sell … and no doubt Dallas lost track of the number he was able to turn. Below was my first totaled project car that we worked on in the evenings while in college … a 1974 Capri (although I did an engine rebuild, rust repair and paint job with my dad on our 1967 Ford Custom 500).

Tell congress how you feel about SOPA and PIPA-for or against

Against my inner voice telling me not to bother, I wrote to my congressmen yesterday regarding the Stop Internet Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA). There are areas that I agree with and understand, but also way too many areas that will impact what most of us appreciate about the Internet. As written, it is a bad bill.

Several of the big players online drew attention to bills SOPA H.R. 3261 in the House and PIPA S. 968 in the Senate and have taken unprecedented actions that draw attention to the legislation. They many have stated a position by “going black” or “going dark” as a way to express concern and unity in opposition to the bill. Let’s hope Congress at least waters down the current bills and can find a way to both protect industries who’s business is being impacted by piracy (understandable) and yet can keep the Internet a place to freely exchange ideas, research content, as well as enjoy reading, listening, watching and playing without heavy restrictions or limitations. For many, there is a real concern over potential legal action, DNS changes and a loss to our first amendment right of free speech.

The photo is not what Volkswagen owners think

I saw the key photo above as a tease in a recent article highlighting the 10 cheapest new cars you can buy and was disappointed as other VW owners/shoppers might be – yes the key is a VW key and fob, but the list (below) doesn’t contain a Volkswagen.
 Sad smile

The 10 cheapest new cars you can buy
1. Nissan Versa 1.6 S sedan $11,770
If all you’re after is four wheels and comfortable room for four, the new-for-2012 Nissan Versa has you covered. To be frank, it’s not a very appealing cheap car, but it does hit all the right buttons for buyers who simply want a brand new car with a surprisingly roomy interior. That bargain-basement price even includes air conditioning, a trip computer and a six-way-adjustable driver’s seat, but not a radio.

2. Smart Fortwo Pure $13,240
For urban dwellers, space is sometimes as much of a hurdle as anything. The Smart Fortwo comes to the rescue, packing virtually no luxuries but a bargain basement price and an ultra-compact package. You won’t get air conditioning or even power steering, although a leather-covered steering wheel is curiously standard.

3. Hyundai Accent GLS sedan $13,320
Redesigned for 2012, the Accent is a pleasingly grown-up car with plenty of power and style. Under its streamlined hood lies a 138-horsepower four-cylinder and six-speed manual transmission combination that nets 40 mpg on the highway. But to get that kind of power at this kind of price, you’ll have to forgo air conditioning, which comes in a pricey package that also includes power windows and a stereo system.

4. Ford Fiesta S sedan $13,995
Ford promised upscale features when it first introduced the Fiesta to our market for 2011 and the Blue Oval has largely delivered. Although a Fiesta can be optioned up to near luxury-car specifications, it’s at the bottom end of the market where the value equation is at its strongest. For under $14,000, it’s the cheapest car on our list with both air conditioning and an AM/FM radio with an auxiliary input, although its passenger seat only offers adjustment in two directions.

5. Kia Rio LX sedan $14,150
Banish your preconceived notions: Rio offers plenty of style and no shortage of features for the price by essentially building on the Fiesta with more power (the same 138 horsepower as its kissing-cousin Hyundai Accent) and more features (like height adjustment for the driver’s seat). In addition, it comes with a well-publicized 100,000 mile, 10-year powertrain warranty.

6. Kia Soul $14,650
With its otherworldly looks and roomy interior, Soul is certainly a standout in this class. It was given a new 1.6-liter four-cylinder for 2012 (the same engine in the Rio and Accent), but its high-value mission in life remains unchanged. Soul is the cheapest car on our list to come with standard Bluetooth connectivity and it also includes power windows and locks and air conditioning.

7. Chevrolet Sonic 1LS sedan $14,660
With its perennially miserable Aveo now officially put out to pasture, Chevrolet finally has a genuinely competitive subcompact. Not only is the Sonic a looker, it also comes standard with General Motors’ exclusive OnStar system, a huge bonus for drivers young and old alike. In addition, the base price point also includes 10 airbags, air conditioning, power door locks with keyless entry and alloy wheels.

8. Toyota Yaris L 3-door $14,875
True, the Toyota badge undeniably adds a little to the Yaris’ bottom line. How else can we explain a relatively modest spec sheet with a 1.5-liter, 106-horsepower engine and two fewer side doors than anything else? Still, Pam Beasley’s runabout boasts an upmarket, high-quality feel evidenced everywhere from the solid “thunk” of its doors to the clicking sound made by its (few) power accessories. In short, it feels like a Toyota.

9. Nissan Versa 1.8 S hatchback $15,260
Versa shoppers might be a bit confused to learn that the five-door hatchback model is a carry-over from last year, which helps explain just why both are on our list. With its more powerful engine and comparatively upmarket interior, the Versa hatchback definitely feels a grade above the sedan, although it offers far less interior room and its overall value is a bit weak compared to the rest of this list.

10. Mazda Mazda2 Sport $15,325
Mazda 2 isn’t a winner on the spec sheet, where its 100 horsepower engine seems to let it down, but it comes with most of the features we’d expect at this price and it boasts unmatched budget car driving dynamics. Simply put, Mazda2 is fun to drive thanks to its tight steering, taut suspension and ultra light weight. It’s the closest thing to a go-kart you’ll find on this list.

The 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

As a follow up automotive related comment, I was impressed with the quality of the Hyundai Sonata I rented last month and doubly impress when they announced in Detroit that their hybrid would have a “lifetime warranty” on the Lithium Polymer Gel battery pack. This hybrid vehicle might be an excellent consideration for those wanting a comfortable, fuel efficient sedan – this 40mpg car could be a replacement for my wife’s Rav4?

Remembering MLK and checking the high area gasoline prices

Posted By on January 16, 2012

martinlutherkingjr

There are only a handful of leaders that come along in one’s lifetime and for my generation, one of them is Martin Luther King, Jr (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968). Most know the history of Mr. King and the civil rights movement around challenging the laws particularly in the south, but I enjoyed a history lesson by rereading MLK’s Bio.

Martin Luther King Jr’s childhood was “normal” for an African-American growing up in pre-World War II Atlanta, but a lessor know item recorded in his biography is that at age 12 he “supposedly” attempted suicide. His grandmother died and the event was traumatic for him … “because he was out watching a parade against his parents’ wishes when she died.”  The biography reads that he was so distraught that he “attempted suicide by leaping from a second story window at the family home.”

Have a thoughtful holiday and celebrate the positive achievement that came from this man and those who fought for equality. Also check out the new memorial in Washington DC.

A less important note, and no connection to MLK, is for those of us who use a few gallons of fossil fuel per year  … the gasoline prices have been up the last few weeks. Usually this time of the year we have the lowest fuel prices? For whatever reason, they are now high and expected to move even high, possibly $4.00 per gallon, by summer.

cincygasprices_lovelandoh12This morning I heard that gasoline was a bit lower in the Dayton area — $3.18 per gallon — but my daily drive is not taking me that direction, yet. I actually contemplated the idea of heading in that direction after looking at my fuel gauge and noticing all the local area stations were much higher, although the local convenient store did lower prices a few cents this morning. North of Cincinnati we’ve locked in at around $3.50 to $3.60 and a quick search of CincyGasPrices.com turned up the lowest in the surrounding area to be in Loveland – $3.23.

Costa Concordia collides with rock off Italian island of Giglio

As a family who enjoys traveling by cruise ship, the reports from Italy and the Costa Concordia are shocking after the ship ran aground on Friday. It is difficult for me in the day of GPS, sonar, autopilots, etc to understand how a ship of this size (4200 people) with an experienced captain and crew could have hit the rocks near the small island of Giglio. It is equally puzzling to hear the preliminary reports regarding how the captain and crew handled (or didn’t handle) the emergency procedures.

Current reports are that “at least five people died after the Concordia ran aground on the tiny island of Giglio Friday night. Several others remained unaccounted for.”

Additional news report have passengers telling disturbing stories about preparedness:

Survivors recounted a frantic rush by passengers to get on lifeboats, while the crew appeared helpless and overwhelmed to cope.

"There wasn’t anybody to help you," Shafer said. "I mean, the passengers were loading the lifeboats by themselves."

Compounding the problem was that only one side of lifeboats was available as the ship was listing. Passenger Laurie Willits, from Ontario, Canada, said some lifeboats on the higher side got stuck, leaving people suspended in mid-air amid the sounds of children crying and screaming.

The Bahamas look pretty inviting this time of year

Although I love our house and like living in Ohio, winter is the time I envy those who have sailed south and are spending their days exploring the islands of the Caribbean.

A sailing couple spending the winter in the Bahamas aboard their Baba Anastasia posted the photo above, no doubt knowing at least a few of us reading their blog or checking their Facebook page would be dreaming that we were there too. Very nice. It has me remembering the old 1980s song and advertising campaign … “It’s better in the Bahamas” and times on Baba 25 years or so ago  … certainly good memories when I read about Jen and Maxwell.

Tebow Mania – a sign that Americans appreciate the “good guy”

Posted By on January 14, 2012

With the NFL playoffs in full swing, I can’t imagine that there will be a more watchedtebowing_obama game this season than Saturday evening’s New England Patriots and Denver Broncos game … unless perhaps Tim Tebow takes the Broncos to the Superbowl? Even the President has been known to slip into Tebow mode before starting his day in the Oval Office, praying that his 4th year goes like a Tebow 4th quarter (or OT) no doubt!
