Oil sets new record today over $135/barrel

Posted By on May 22, 2008

oil derekThe price of oil hit a record high above $135 a barrel this Thursday morning which is more than twice what it cost a year ago. According to press reports, latest surge was driven by data showing that supplies of crude in the US had fallen by 5.4 million barrels. “US light, sweet crude for July delivery reached $135.09,” in May 2007 it was priced at about $65. Gasoline moved up yet again in my area about 20 more cents to just under $4.00/gallon — with this much money being siphoned out of consumers pockets, it has got to make an impact on discretionary spending?

EPA posts 2009 VW TDI fuel economy numbers

Posted By on May 21, 2008

EPA numbersThe U.S. Department of Energy‘s FuelEconomy website has updated numbers posted for the ‘soon to be released’ (summer 2008) Volkswagen Jetta and Sportswagen TDI clean diesels. The new fuel use numbers show miles per gallon economy for the six-speed manual version at 30 city, 41 highway and at 34 combined. The DSG automatic transmission are nearly as efficient at just a single MPG lower for each number. As the acronym often states … YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary), but I suspect that many TDI buyers will comfortably see better economy from these new TDIs. (drivers of the test vehicles have noted 50 mpg on highway loops)

FuelFrog and Twitter for fuel usage

Posted By on May 21, 2008

FuelFrog LogoIts not working all that well for me just yet, but I like the simplicity of the “mashing” with Twitter and FuelFrog. Three guys who call themselves SecondPixel, David Rasch, Brandon Milford and Alan Cox founded the company to create, yet powerful web applications. Fuelfrog is one which helps track and graph fuel usage with an SMS messaging capable cell phone and there website. What you do is to enter the miles you traveled on your last tank, the price you paid, and how many gallons you added to your car. FuelFrog compiles the information and the trends about your gas mileage and the amount you spend.

Chart last three fillls
With FuelFrog you can —
* Quickly add info to your account after filling up.
* View trends for the amount you spend on gas.
* See how gas prices change in your city over time.
* Gain insight into how your car’s gas mileage changes.

Use Twitter or the web interface to enter the data —
* Enter your Twitter Username on the Settings page of FuelFrog
* Enter your fuel data (miles, price, gallons–MPG) — Example: @fuelfrog 342 3.239 10.293

This would be perfect for a ‘certain’ technology loving person and their new “Smart Car.” (hint, hint)

VW sees 30% of its sales diesel by 2018

Posted By on May 20, 2008

In a Turin, Italy press conference, Volkswagen’s powertrain research director, Wolfgang Steiger, stated that “roughly 30% of VW’s total U.S. sales will likely be derived from its diesel models by 2018.” Compared to its prior 15% percent of vehicles and near monopoly on affordable diesel cars, that percentage will nearly double their sales in ten years. The rollout of their clean diesel technology in late summer is expected to kick off this initiative. (Motortrend)

BUT … unless politics and lobbiest rethink their strategy … only diesel advocates will be considering diesel — just take a look at the pump prices (and its not even fall and winter — when fuel oil demand is up). An interesting article in The Independent reported on diesel fuel and the new clean diesel cars that will begin showing up in the U.S. … just as diesel fuel prices have rise significantly higher than gasoline.

The American Petroleum Institute attributes the fast-climbing price of diesel and its higher-than-gasoline cost to several factors. Diesel is a close relative of home heating oil, and so costs usually rise in the winter. And while demand for regular gasoline is slipping, diesel use has climbed in the U.S. and production is at capacity. What’s more, if gas prices go up consumers can use less, but if diesel fuel goes up the trucks, which right now are the big users of diesel, still have to keep on trucking.
Diesel use doesn’t fall, so demand is not susceptible to price as it is with gasoline. Plus refiners spent $8 billion to reconfigure their plants to produce cleaner, reduced-sulfur diesel. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, refining costs make up 21% of the cost of diesel, whereas refining costs for regular gasoline are only 8% of the total cost. It seems as though refiners are looking to get their investment back and that is driving up the cost.
Then there are the taxes. Percentage-wise they are about the same, 13% on regular and 12% on diesel. The actual difference is 6 cents; the federal government charges 24.4 cents per gallon and regular gas is taxed at 18.4 cents a gallon, 6 cents lower. So our government charges more in tax for engines that give better fuel economy. How’s that for making sense? In Europe, taxes on diesel are lower than gasoline because they want to encourage diesel use and higher fuel economy.

Here’s the question “Will they sell?”

These decisions were all made before diesel prices here soared so far past gasoline and wiped out the potential of cash savings. Europe is different. About half the vehicles sold in Europe are diesel because fuel, both gasoline and diesel, is much more expensive than here. But diesel is a bargain, and its cost is much lower.

Of course bargin is one man’s opinion … since prices of gasoline and diesel at a Texaco station in Brussels reported regular gasoline selling at $9 a gallon (at $1.59 to the Euro) and diesel was $7.81.

Tri-State City Rugby Championship Tourney 2008

Rugby TaylorThis past weekend was full of May oriented ‘goings-on.’ From attending a couple important graduation open houses to working at getting our yard in order for my son’s high school graduation open house, to the culmination of the best rugby season we’ve had. It was a perfect time to have been a senior as Taylor’s Cincinnati Jets Rugby team played for the top spot in the city and surrounding area’s number one spot. The tournament at Brimelow Field in Fairfield Ohio was and outstanding one. The Jets won their first which pitted them against North Bend in the afternoon. All the teams played well and when all was said and done they finished the year second in the city.

Team
What an outstanding job of coaching and team play … this group of boys have improved each and every game making Taylor’s third and final high school year playing rugby the best. I’ll post a Picasa slideshow of a few of the photos I took on Saturday below.

Earthrace on its way to Hawaii

Earthrace.net Map
Update on Earthrace since they made short stops in Panama, Mexico and San Diego for fuel. They have been running well with the experienced crew who are remaining alert and handling several smallish issues well. The second round the world record attempt is well ahead of schedule. The biggest problem since crossing the Atlantic has been that of getting fuel to the boat fast enough and the worry at the Panama Canal ended up not being a problem and their stop in Mexico was publicity filled.

Captain Pete Bethune reflected on that stop:

“Como diamis? (what is your name?)”, I say to one of the kids watching us intently from the dock.
“Manuel”, he replies shyly, shuffling his feet. His friends are all looking at him.
“Es possiblay visitar elbarco Earthrace (is possible to visit the Earthrace boat)”, I say to him. His face lights up, and next thing he and his mates are all running across the gangplank and hooting as they scarper into the helm of the world’s coolest boat.

An hour later and there is still a constant stream of people wandering through. “Ees very nice you let us look your boat”, says a father, who has just managed to drag his kids back onto the dock. It’s funny how I’ve been on Earthrace for two years now, and I still really enjoy letting the public on-board. It is the only asset we have…and thinking about it, the only reason the boat exists is because of the generosity of so many volunteers, sponsors and family members who still work endlessly to support us. So the least we can do is be generous with the boat.

Also, our job is to connect with people – sometimes on a superficial level, like today through media. Millions of Mexicans will see the images of Earthrace on their TV screens tonight, and a proportion of them will remember a little about what we do and the messages we carry. There are other people we connect with more strongly however. Like the kids who went aboard in our brief refuelling stop. Some of them will remember today for a long, long time.

The flotilla is there to escort us out, and amazingly, the entire breakwater is now lined with locals all waving and cheering us as we idle out into open water.
“What an amazing sight”, Adam says, as he’s tying off the last of the ropes. I look over to the end of the breakwater, and there amongst the crowd, I spot the father, with his two kids waving furiously at us.
“Yes mate. We are indeed blessed to experience this.”

Oil gone wild …

Diesel Inflation Chart

The fuel price discussions continue as I made small talk with clients throughout the week; Friday was no exception. Petroleum traded at an all time high to almost $127 per barrel in the morning on strong demand and there is very little evidence that we’ll see an additional supply come online this summer … or that demand will weaken. In fact, Goldman Sachs release a report that they believe crude will average $140 for the second half of 2008 and oil traders are betting that Chinese demand for diesel will push prices higher. (as are U.S. refiners — they see better margins in diesel) For most people, just looking at the diesel (or gasoline) verses CPI inflation graph from 1995 to 2008, it is obvious that we need to do some serious re-budgeting.

First look at Palm Treo 800w is disappointing

Bold and 800w
As someone who started with a Palm Pilot many years ago and who has been wondering what will replace my business oriented Palm Treo, I am disappointed at seeing the new Palm Treo 800w (at least displayed side by side with the new Blackberry Bold). I can’t imagine many new smartphone shoppers will select this Treo 800w when the new Blackberry, a gen-2 iPhone and many new slick look-a-likes are coming to market at the same time. Beauty and brains are equally important when competing for buyers.

New 800wFor me, “form does still follows function” … and perhaps I should withhold judgment … BUT the humble styling of the 800w placed side by side with a rival smartphone doesn’t offer much hope — in fact it is kind of a turn-off. If Palm is planning to survive, they had better work on attracting new customers with at least the “look” consumers are expecting. Even existing Palm Treo ‘enthusiasts’ are going to have a hard time swallowing the antiquated design unless there is something on the horizon worth waiting for — at least this disappointed Treo enthusiast. WSJ says “Refiners Tilt to Diesel over Gasoline”

Posted By on May 16, 2008

upAccording to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, U.S. refineries are trying to maximize output of the “more-profitable” diesel fuel even as the summer driving season kicks off. The article mentions that the “global hunger for diesel, coupled with tight refining capacity” offers better profits than gasoline. Last week diesel prices were up 18.2 cents to a record $4.33 per gallon which is a 56% rise over last year at this time. Couple this with an increase demand internationally and refiners see the profits better in diesel than gasoline. Gasoline prices have climbed in the past year too, but “less dramatically” than diesel, according to the article. (link)

A Happy Birthday lunch with my daughter

Posted By on May 14, 2008

Happy 22 Birthday K
One of the advantages of being on the road for business during the week is that I get a chance to see my daughter. Today was no exception … and the highlight was that it was her Birthday! She has been studying for a Neurology test tomorrow and brought along a stack of index cards 6 inches thick … of which we didn’t even look at over lunch. (I occasionally flash through her study cards with her) Anyway … it was nice that she made time for “dear ol’ dad” … and shared that tasty chocolate cake with ice cream with me!
🙂
BTW … here’s an economical and tasty lunch tip: The restaurant chain Bennigans has several terrific $4.99 lunch combos which includes a drink. Although I tipped a bit more than normal today (free Birthday desert), two people could comfortably have a nice sit-down lunch with table service for about the same as a McDonald’s combo and almost half of what I pay for the “pick two” at Panera Bread.
