The quality of the photo isn’t the best, but the content is pretty impressive. The latest issue of the weekly Cruising Compass had this photo as the "Cruising Shot of the Week" … excellent!
This busy shot of Boston Harbor from July 2013, with the Navy Blue Angels flying over the USS Constitution (Old Iron Sides) and a U.S. Coast Guard training tall ship, was shared by John Carrigg. So much going on, it takes a while to take it all in!
Twice now I’ve found myself unable to post to my WordPress blog. Once a few years ago using the windows based Microsoft Live Writer(now defunct) and recently using the open-sourced Open Live Writer.
The “Invalid Server Response – The response to the blogger.getUsersBlogs method received from the blog server was invalid:” error pops up. When trying to decipher what had changed, I recalled that I recently updated WordPress and in the process cleaned out a few post revisions using an older plug-in called Revision Removal. It “has not been tested” with my current WordPress 4.7.1 and figured it “might” be the culprit — and it was. Deactivating this plug-in corrected the problem.
So … if you are having and issue posting to WordPress, first check your plug-ins to be sure they are not the problem … especially older plug-ins that aren’t being updated or maintained.
A few of these screwdriver hacks are not necessarily new, but could be helpful if you are ever caught shorthanded for the right tool. I’m particularly fond of using the wrench and screwdriver together (above left) as even with a full set of wrenched and sockets, there are a few oddities preventing wrenches from fitting as tightly as they should … and who doesn’t need help holding those teeny tiny screw when putting things back together?

CVS is now selling a rival, generic version of Mylan’s EpiPen at about a sixth of its price, just months after the maker of the life-saving allergy treatment was eviscerated before Congress because of its soaring cost to consumers.The drugstore chain says it will charge $109.99 for a two-pack of the authorized generic version of Adrenaclick, a lesser-known treatment compared to EpiPen, which can cost more than $600.
The long drawn out "laundry room upgrade" is finally finished as mentioned yesterday, but at least it improves and modernizes what we had. The old GE top-load washing machine was regularly being fixed and the dryer was long past it’s prime … but still working after the "bearing kit repair."
The newer graphite color (currently the in color along with stainless steel) on the LG front load stacked washer and dryer improves space use a bit … but only because of added mini stainless steel splash area next to the utility sink and shelving. I’ve added a hidden shelf and storage area to the right of the stacked machines which will fit 3 Clorox bleach jugs wide and quite a bit of bulky storage on a heavy duty shelf at "stacked" height overhead. It will be used for bulky kitchen items like roasters and storage Tuperwares of towels, placemats, etc. I’m sure my wife will have no problem finding bulky items to stack up top! Under that shelf a new LED tube offers another 1000 lumens of light along with the normal 2 bulb by 4 foot florescent tubes overhead. It operates off of a motion detector and turn on when walking into the laundry room and off 5 minutes after no motion is detected. (I’m hoping to add the wall switch to also control that ceiling light … we will see if one motion detector can control a switch and plug at the same time?)
Brenda and I admire art, be it paintings, carvings, knick-knacks, sailboat models or a piece of old furniture. Over the years we have added several items to our home, be they purchased from an estate sale or hand-me-downs. While adding the new shelves to our laundry room and repainting, I stopped to admire the craftsmanship of a table Brenda was cleaning made by Jamestown, New York furniture makers 100+ years ago. A few of the details in this antique table we use everyday are unique and definitely hand crafted … perhaps we should take better care of it?
Besides having a relatively simple slide system for pulling apart the table to add a leaf or two (or 3 or 4), tiny wedges were added to the back of each leaf to keep the table top level. This makes for some very unique and creative craftsmanship.
BTW, this was her mother’s “rescued” dining room table … one she pulled from a trash heap decades ago … obviously furniture was a commodity in a furniture city?
While contemplating complexity vs simplicity in life and on sailboats, I once again stumbled on a precious morsel by Lin Pardey who has been land-based in New Zealand. Taleisin was sold to a young couple who now enjoys Lin and Larry’s “home” for over 30 years (mentioned before). Lin continues to write, appear at boatshows and even offers a little advice to those reading her blog. After making my own “too narrow” ditty bag, I’d like to try my hand at a larger “Jay’s” rigging bag. Great ideas, especially the toggle, wooden bottom and shackle preventing it from dumping or going overboard. I’m currently using a cheap “little black tool bag” that stows in the companionway step, but it is not the right kind of bag for most nautical tasks or even to carry an extra tool or two. Here is a video left unedited to honor the mantra … “Go small, go simple, go now.”
Although circle cutting is the easy part if you have a table or preferably bandsaw.

After the initial wave of buybacks, phase 2 will be to fix the 2015 diesel Volkswagen Beetle, Golf, Golf SportWagen, Jetta, Passat and 2015 diesel Audi A3 by updating software and adding a diesel particulate filter, diesel oxidation catalyst and NOx catalyst.
VW will now be able to resell diesel vehicles that they repurchased once they are fixed.
