Imagine this editorial cartoon being published by a right-leaning newspaper during a previous presidential campaign … let’s say to a “then” Senator Obama rather than a “now” Senator Cruz?
Something tells me Democrats on the political left would have settled for nothing less than a full apology from the publisher and possible firing of those involved. At this moment, the Washington Post posted a policy explanation “excuse” rather than even attempting an apology. The editor’s note stated that “it’s generally been the policy of our editorial section to leave the children out of it” (probably meaning only the children of Democratic candidates). Fred Hiatt, editor, did removed the cartoon with an “I understand why Ann thought an exception was warranted in this case…” Pretty weak even if he “failed to look at this cartoon” as he claims?
Pulitzer Prize” cartoonist Ann Telnaes wasn’t much better in her Twitter comment today … very sad for a leading mainstream newspaper like the Washington Post.

It is time to post the annual Christmas tree photo on the blog. I’m trying an evening pic with the iPhone … as steady as I can? The tree is full, but not quite as tall as our usual trees. I’m sure the kids will be disappointed that it isn’t bigger, but then Taylor always want a bigger tree!
Brenda decided to put up her “fancy foyer tree” this year too. It has her collection of glass trinkets and Franklin Mint gold ornaments … along with a few new ones from my mom’s collection (nice). It looks beautiful, although I’m hesitant to tell here that fearing she will petition to replace our color lights and “mish-mash” sentimental family tree.
The decorating is done, presents are wrapped (except for a couple) and groceries packed in the refrigerator – I think we are ready for the kids to come home for Christmas!

While the up and coming generation ogles the impressive all-electric Teslas, I’m still attracted to gasoline and oil burners (aka: diesels) … especially the latest refined performance and luxury sedans coming from BMW.
The 2016 BMW 7 series is particularly impressive, with its sleek lines and twin turbo V-8 engine cranking out 445-horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. If it were not for the complex electronic and computer gadgetry sure to go out of date quickly, requiring sophisticated dealer service, I’d be a little more interested in a “secondhand” version of this car someday. Still, it is an attractive car to admire.

Another excuse to try to get Blogsy, the blog posting app on my iPad, to include photos without posting them to Flickr or Google (the two options besides “normal WordPress media” built into Blogsy). Unfortunately the suggestion from the programmer was to use a separate sFTP client — very cumbersome and not the way to go. I’ll probably need to resort to either the WordPress app for the iPad or the the WordPress web editor? That’s too bad since I liked using Blogsy.

The photo above is the new “chase” for our fireplace chimney which will eventually be stone veneer. The old brick veneer chase was wobbling (poor construction) and beginning to crack apart at the corners and roof flashing. When we had our roof work done, the roofer was unable to finish the flashing next to the old brick veneer … culminating in an entirely new project and another home repair expense. So the repairs began over the weekend due to a week of rain is in the forecast; we are water tight now, but it would be nice if the weather would remain dry a couple more days.

This well done graphic has probably be around for a while since the Apple earbud looks to be the older type … but I thought the knot tying humor was pretty funny.

It’s wasn’t as painless as envisioned during the planning stage, but the dry-stack brick heat-shield for my garage shop is ready for the old woodstove. After spending a few evenings this week fitting, bending and riveting the 6061 aluminum, I think it is ready for the catalytic woodstove to be connected to the new chimney pipe. As I recall, getting the black stovepipe cut and fit was never an easy thing to do. We’ll see how it goes this weekend.

A couple improvement to our Internet connectivity at the house this past week as I quarreled with Time Warner Cable yet again about our service and our bill. Of course they once again
wanted to schedule a tech to come out and look at things to determine why our paid for turbo speed was only about 2 – 3 Mbps down? Begrudgingly I said ok as I’m chucking the unused TWC DVR to save $7/month –whoopee! A few minutes later a tech checking the service ticket “tweaked” our setting and voilà we magically had better speeds (image left). So much for upgrading our router and wifi and wasting a year paying for better speed only to get substandard service.
Now if we could only get that bill permanently on some kind of a rotating promo price! Ugh!
Update two was an internal one for me. I’m “foolishly rushing in where angels fear to tread (joking)” … another Microsoft upgrade – this time to Windows 10. Gulp … wish me luck as it will be doubly risking since it is on my iMac running Parallels (now available)!

I detoured to stop my dad’s house in Sidney Ohio on my way back from NE Ohio on Thursday night while driving the ’82 Mercedes 300D Turbodiesel and was shocked to fill up for only $1.90/gallon. When was the last time diesel fuel was priced at these levels? Amazing … but can’t imagine it can stay this way for much longer — eventually the surplus will disappear.

I regularly read the updates from the Canadian couple and TV series host of the sailing program Distant Shores and wanted to archive their post and illustration on using the downwind spinnaker pole on passages.
