Can Carter Copter make the next leap in personal aviation?

jetsonsAlthough the dream of flying around like the Jetsons has been something many of us believed would be here by now, those at Carter Copters are a bit more serious in developing something that might move us closer to that reality. Their combination of aviation engineering using fuel sipping diesel engines, gyro-plane lift, airplane like speeds and helicopter maneuverability is in my opinion on the right track.cartercopterdiesel

I listened to an interesting EAA interview with founder Jay Carter about their recent flight testing – perhaps an experimental kit is right around the corner?

A comment in President Barack Obama’s State of the Union call for corporate tax cuts and a spending freeze along with good corporate earnings reports have helped the Dow Jones Industrial Average to cross the 12000 mark. Let’s hope jobs follow?

Jimmy Buffett off stage

On a totally separate subject, I just heard that singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett fell from a stage during a concert in Sydney Australia and went unconscious. Some say there was a bright flash before he fell and that he had a cut on his head as paramedics rushed him to the hospital.

SOTU: President Obama, liberals and conservatives differ

Posted By on January 26, 2011

Wh.gov’s web and social networking team did a great job with enhanced State of the Union coverage, as well as pre and post-coverage tonight. I wish I could say the same for my confidence in President Obama’s leadership and vision for our country.

(SOTU Transcript and Republican response video below the split)

First a positive – it was great to have the Hon. John Boehner behind the President, rather than Pelosi and knowing that there is at least a check to growing government. sotuobamaSecond, the mention of Gabby Giffords and the shooting in Tucson was most respectful: "Tucson reminded us that no matter who we are or where we come from, each of us is a part of something greater." Unfortunately that was the last believable component of Obama’s SOTU speech. I had difficulty believing that his focus will be on “jobs” and need to keep us competitive; instead I saw a campaign for re-election starting in earnest – “say the right things.” His bragging about “tax cuts” being passed rang a little weak in my ears … considering his policies require more government and more spending … and therefore more taxes. I think he is being a bit disingenuous taking create for extending taxes cuts.

As for re-inventing America, working smarter and focusing on innovation are all great talking points, but Democrats and Republicans have two entirely different philosophies in how we get there. Obama’s recommendation that we stop subsidizing the oil companies and that they are “doing ok on their own.” This may be true, but instead of removing government, he turns right around and wants to extend subsidies to another industry. Not only is there a disagreement that government should be picking winners and losers … there is a real disconnect in funding business when we don’t have the money in the first place.

For all the polite applause and congress making an effort to show civility to the citizens, there are some serious disagreements as to government’s place in peoples’ lives. Personally I much preferred less political correctness and more political directness of Rep. Paul Ryan’s Republican response (below).

HP-Palm’s new tablet device needs a better name

Posted By on January 25, 2011

So the HP-Palm gadget many though might be the “PalmPad” is not going to receive the blessing of the United States Patent and Trademark Office; they sees the too close to other trademarks? (Palm, Palm Pre, etc) It sort of looks to me as if HP needs to go back to the ‘slate’ devices – maybe the “TouchSlate” isn’t so bad after all?

"Registration of the applied-for mark is refused because of a likelihood of confusion with the marks in U.S. Registration Nos [lists 5 registration numbers]."

"Trademark Act Section 2(d) bars registration of an applied-for mark that so resembles a registered mark that it is likely that a potential consumer would be confused or mistaken or deceived as to the source of the goods and/or services of the applicant and registrant."

"Applicant’s mark PALMPAD is similar to the registered marks PALM because applicant’s mark contains the entirety of the registered marks. Simply adding the term PAD to its mark does not differentiate the marks sufficiently to overcome the striking similarity created by applicant’s use of the registered mark PALM in its mark. The mere addition of matter to a registered mark generally does not obviate the similarity between the marks nor does it overcome a likelihood of confusion under Trademark Act Section 2(d)."

MyTether on webOS 1.5.5 for the Palm Pre is working again

Posted By on January 25, 2011

After switching to Verizon’s webOS Mobile Hotspot on my Sprint connected Palm Pre in order to be able to tether my phone, I had all but given up on MyTether. Although I’m not an everyday “tether-er” … having the ability to connect my notebook computer to the Internet in a pinch is important. Thankfully Raja (the developer) has updated his Java coded program and MyTether  is working once again. In the email I received, Raja also talked with some encouragement that he is making an effort to program a “C ” version in order to keep MyTether working once webOS 2.0 is installed on HP/Palm devices. I’m hopeful future updates will be successful before webOS 2.0 is ready to be installed on my Palm Pre (that is if it ever becomes available).

Fun Twitter related web app: twbirthday.com

Posted By on January 25, 2011

Every once in a while an unusual and simple web app catches one’s attention – in this case twbirthday.com. Plug your Twitter name into this site and it creates a Birth Certificate along with “assigning” a Godfather; who is your Godfather? In my case it is my New Hampshire friend Scott Bilik (@sbilik).

Wow, has it been 3 almost 4 years of ‘tweeting’ for @richc?

It is hard to believe my little girl is almost Dr. Katelyn

Posted By on January 24, 2011

katelyncorbett2010 Today marks my daughter Katelyn’s final residency interview (see 2006 White Coat) as she moves one step closer to finding out where she’ll be spending the next few years working (actually it’s a “second-look” interview). It has been an exciting few months watching her travel and listening to her comments regarding the different pediatric residency programs. Most of her interviews have ben in the midwest during the last couple of months and it has been nice having her around more often between interviews. Her interviews have included hospitals in Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids MI; Akron, Dayton, Columbus and Cleveland OH; Buffalo and Rochester NY and Lexington KY.

The big day will be Residency Match Day (NRMP) on March 17, 2011 where all M.D. programs around the country participating in the National Residency Matching Program are announced. The exciting day almost makes her NEOUCOM medical school graduation a non-event.

The next important deadline for my daughter is for her to rank the programs she prefers while hoping that they also rank her equally. Besides getting the paperwork submitted by the deadline, she’ll also be getting prepared to spend the month of February working in California at a hospital associated with Stanford University School of Medicine. I can’t believe her school education is coming to an end.

NFL’s Bears vs Packers & Jets vs Steelers

superbowl45

While I haven’t been overly excited about January playoff leading to Superbowl 45 this year, I am enjoying the final two games of the playoffs this afternoon. Currently the Chicago Bears are having a difficult game against the Green Bay Packers, but the Chicago defense has elevated their play in the second half. Still with Jay Cuttler sidelined with a knee injury, the Bears offense is struggling. The second string quarterback has also headed to the sidelines and Bears 3rd string youngster Caleb Hanie in control AND more importantly leading his team down the field to their first score of the game. I’m holding on since this game isn’t over. (14-7 in the 3rd quarter)

Other news more Cincinnati Bengals oriented is the ESPN story about veteran quarterback Carlson Palmer:

Carson Palmer wants Trade

Carson Palmer will ask the Cincinnati Bengals to trade him and will contemplate retirement if he does not get his wish, according to several sources.

Palmer, the No. 1 overall pick by the Bengals in 2003, was unavailable for comment as he and his wife Shaelynn were awaiting the birth of their third child.

A Bengals spokesman had no comment. The team has Palmer under contract through 2014.

Palmer has become the object of fan frustration in the past two years and sources said he has grown frustrated with the team’s inconsistencies. The Bengals finished 4-12 in 2010.

Sources familiar with Palmer’s plan and mindset said he is financially secure for the rest of his life and willing to follow through and retire.

Several teams will be in the market for quarterbacks this offseason. Seattle will have an opening at quarterback if the Seahawks can’t re-sign Matt Hasselbeck. Palmer won the Heisman Trophy for now-Seahawks coach Pete Carroll at USC in 2002. San Francisco, where his wife was raised, and Arizona could also be options.

Palmer suffered a major knee injury in a first-round playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at the end of the 2005 season. He also suffered an elbow injury in 2008 and considered Tommy John surgery before choosing to rehab without having the operation.

Ryan Riddell is 2/3s through is ‘30 days homeless’ project

Posted By on January 22, 2011

The husband of a close friend of ours is in the middle of a community awareness and missions project that has been both eye opening for him and a chance to bring community attention to the homeless.

pastor_ryan_riddell_110114Ryan Riddell, a pastor and real estate agent , is spending the month of January ‘homeless’ rather than comfortably living in his suburban home. Instead, he is living minimally out of his van and listening to the homeless and sharing God’s message of salvation to those he meets. He does his best to fill their needs with the help of others (some spiritual and some physical) and has had his heart softened to the plight of those who find themselves ‘homeless’ and struggling to survive in his own backyard of Dayton, Ohio.

Ryan’s story is being told daily through social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter … as well as through his personal videos posted to his blog, but it is also being told through local and national media. Although I’ve been watching his daily postings, it was surprising to of his project being posted on so many news sites. According to Ryan, Diane Sawyer, a producer at ABC News called him to talk a bit about what he was doing.

Probably most helpful is knowing ways to help

  1. Please pray for the people on the streets, and the kids that are “Aging Out” of the system.
  2. Please give to support “New Family Tree” ministry. My hope is that 1000 people would be willing to give as much as they possibly can to help this cause. You can donate online by clicking here.  You can give by sending your check to: Shelter Church – 1541 John Glenn Rd.  Dayton, OH 45410 memo – 30 Days Homeless.  Your donation no matter the amount can help save and transform lives.
  3. Please get the word out – invite your friends and family to this blog, to our facebook site and follow me on twitter. Several of my friends are participating in a “no shave” January as a reminder of the cause and a way to talk about it in everyday life.

Thanks for supporting this ministry. Together we are changing the world.

Here’s a recent article from the Dayton Daily News:

DAYTON — When it comes to the important issues of the day, it’s usually easier to relate to one person’s dramatic story than to overwhelming statistics.

That was the case recently with golden-voiced Ted Williams, the Columbus man who was living on the streets until a newspaper reporter helped turn him into an overnight sensation.

It’s also the idea behind local pastor Ryan Riddell’s January journey.

The clergyman is hoping to bring awareness to the issue of homelessness this month by sleeping and living in his van on the streets of Dayton instead of in his comfortable Miamisburg home. He seeks shelter from bitter January days at the downtown library or bus hub.

According to Joyce Probst MacAlpine, Montgomery County’s manager of housing and homeless solutions, there are about 4,000 homeless in the Dayton area and there was an 11 percent increase in people at local shelters in 2010.

It’s the medium that makes Riddell’s experiences unique; he’s using social media to bring home his message in creative new ways. He’s constantly updating his website, Tweeting and posting on Facebook to let followers know when someone he’s encountered on the streets needs a pair of long johns, overnight housing or a pair of shoes.

Riddell, bundled up and unshaven, shares his daily reflections through both video and written blogs, appearing on television and radio to tell his story and to grow his audience. He’s been featured in media outlets ranging from the Huffington Post to ABC.com, was one of Friday’s Intriguing People on CNN’s “This Just In.”

He’s racked up 1,000 friends on Facebook and has had 30,000 hits on his web page.

A minister at Shelter Community Church of the Nazarene in Belmont as well as a realtor for Keller Williams, Riddell, 45, also owns a roofing business in Miamisburg.

“I have four reasons for doing this,” he explains. “The first is for my own spiritual renewal. I’m trying to take 30 days to step back from the things I do in the business world and the church.”

A second reason, he says, is that “Jesus became like us in order to reach us.” Riddell says the more he gets into the world of the homeless, the more receptive people have been, allowing him to be of help.

That help may range from passing out drinks and snacks to locating overnight shelter for someone who has been sleeping in a tent and on the street for months. A growing number of followers, including area church members, are helping him by filling needs as they arise.

For example, earlier this week, Riddell was attending a service and meal at Target: Dayton Ministries when an 18-year-old girl named Samantha asked if he could get her a Bible. Within 45 seconds after he’d posted the request on Facebook, someone had offered to drop off the book at St. Vincent’s that night. The same thing happened when Riddell requested a pair of new shoes for a young person who had been wearing the same pair for the past three years.

Ridell says he also hopes to create an awareness of what’s happening downtown, just minutes from where many members of his congregation reside.

“We all hang out at the Oregon District, we socialize, eat, find entertainment, but on the other side of the trestle there’s a semi-tractor trailer and people are sleeping under that on skids with cardboard for insulation,” he says. “I typically drive through there with my windows up and have no awareness of the stuff going on there. I’m trying to live and walk these streets to create an awareness.”

Riddell says we all expect our community organizations to “take care of these things.”

“I believe that biblically we have a responsibility to cry out and help these people,” he says, adding that many of us are quick to insist that the homeless get a job and help themselves.

“These folks are so beaten down and so consumed with basic needs such as food and shelter, it’s hard to get out of that hole,” he explains.

He is particularly concerned about the kids who “age out” of the foster care system and end up living on the streets. He’s working with Salem Church of God in Englewood to help create a new nonprofit organization, New Family Tree, that will provide transitional housing for young people who may have no place to go after age 18.

Riddell insists he isn’t “pretending” to be homeless. He set up rules for himself from the get-go: He’s sleeping in a van rather than taking up a bed at a shelter, eating alongside the homeless at local food missions by invitation. He’s seeing his wife and children and showering twice a week; he carries and uses a credit card when he feels it can help someone.

At first, Riddell says, he was intimidated when hanging out at places like the downtown bus hub. One day, a lady to whom he’d recently sold a house didn’t recognize him.

“I had no idea how engaged I would become,” he says. “It’s gripping me more than I had expected. These weeks on the street have helped me better understand those who are homeless.”

“These people have a story,” he says. “They have a name and a soul. They want their story told, they want to be heard. They appreciate my being their voice.”
