Tech changes: Another free cloud storage service is gone

Posted By on October 19, 2016

1908_Chicago_CubsWouldn’t you know, about the time the Cubs find themselves inching closer to a World Series (drought since 1908), the Logmein FREE cloud storage component know as Cubby is being retired. I highlight "free" since paying PRO customers will continue to keep their storage.

For me, Cubby has been a regular file exchange option, although far from the best. Still it has been quick and reliable on all devices from iOS devices to Mac and Windows based computers. Let’s hope the retiring of the cloud based "Cubbies" is not an omen when it comes to the Chicago Cubbies in their National League Championship Series with the Dodgers.

It is time to move stored files to another cloud storage service (FAQs regarding moving here and their "shutdown on November 16, 2016" announcement below).

Ugly election, Middle East unrest, Economy – October surprise?

Maybe it is just me being a little nervous, but there are a lot of potential triggers for panic. The craziest presidential election I’ve ever seen, a stock market that has risen longer than average between recessions (with tepid economic growth), unrest in the middle east (of course always on fire) and both the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians still looking at a World Series run??? What is with the cryptic Wikileaks 64-character messages?

Posted By on October 17, 2016

Rumors are swirling that something or someone has started triggering the Wikileaks "Deadman’s Switch," which has been put in place if something should happen to founder Julian Assange.

WikileaksDeadmansSwitch1610

Some suspect that a "state party" intentionally severing of his Internet link was more than just someone attempting to silence the release of more incriminating emails, which Assange claims would "sink Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid" (Assange’s "death" was also rumored but not confirmed). Others suspect that Julian Assange is being hack by a large cyber attack … likely a government (currently the U.S. is the most likely ‘state party’) considering that Hillary Clinton, her operatives, Democrat and those in power are currently being hurt by Wikileaks leaking emails. — LINK

More repairs and parts. The John Deere 330 diesel this time.

Posted By on October 17, 2016

JD330FuelFilterRebuildActually this repair is long, LONG overdue. A decade or so ago when I was heavy into running biodiesel, a sticky batch of fuel ended up in our John Deere. I really never hesitated to run about anything in this little Yanmar diesel engine, but the biodiesel was a mistake.

The solvent nature of the methanol used in processing vegetable oil into a viscous biodiesel fuel for diesel engines, really did a number on the rubber fuel components and lines in our early 1980s tractor. Eventually I replaced all the fuel lines and components (including the fuel filter) with something new. The lines were replaced with either copper or Viton (resists the corrosive methanol) and I picked up a different "sight tube" oriented fuel filter. It has all worked great, but I always knew putting a smaller micron "paper" filter back in was the right thing to do.

So, last week when working on the John Deere 330 Generator project, I cleaned up the old fuel filter, replaced the o-rings and bought a new filter cartridge. All that is left is to take things apart and re-plumb.

I love simplicity … so when tossing around political footballs, I generally join the team that at least "attempts" to simplify government and taxes. I’m not naïve enough to believe it steveforbeswill ever happen or even work well, but after filing personal (for friends and family), organizations and business taxes for years, it would sure would be nice to give it a try.

When Steve Forbes was campaigning on his "flat tax" phermancainproposal a couple of decades ago or even Herman Cain and his "9-9-9 plan" … I was intrigued. Enough so that I somewhat studied and evaluate each plan to determine if they were even remotely do-able (provided enough tax revenue, reduce enough credits and deductions or lead to growth enough to make up for rate cuts). That’s when I started to think about my own proposal.

Rich’s Plan …

I first concluded that it would need to be "progressive" enough to gain Democratic support and yet a cut in rates enough to keep Republicans interested. So I inched my way into the the math by looking at the exponential curves and needed revenue. What I came up with was a simple graph-able formula that could take most current U.S. incomes and plot them on a curve in order to generate the tax revenues required to run our country. I’ll admit that eliminating all deductions and credits except the $3000/dependent credit is going to be a tough sell, but besides the well connected who take "full" advantage of the taxcode, the American people as a whole come out winners.

One of the points I highlighted in the above graph, is that the lowest income American would continue to pay no income taxes (something I disagree with but requiring ALL to pay income tax would be a non-starter for many left-leaning politicians — personally I think ALL should have some "skin in the game"). Those those in the middle who have home interest and  those at the top may gripe as well at the loss of at big deduction, but the lower rates benefit exceeds such a deduction in most cases. In fact, only those over $800,000 would be paying the top percentage of 25%  … a number that would also be equal to the "new" U.S. corporate rate. Back to simplicity, it doesn’t help those who shift incomes for tax benefits to corporate shells, etc. Same for capital gains; would also be "simply"  treated as income. Top earners lose on long term capital gains (a big gripe against the uber wealthy at the moment anyway) and most of the middle-class does better by treating their cap gains at the income tax rate (all lower than $350,000 income would see such income at lower than the current capital gains rate).

On the business side … in an attempt to encourage growth … the corporate rates move down to 25% (not low enough for a pro-business lobbyist, but not high enough according to big government progressives — therefore it must be about right). Business should be encouraged to function in the U.S. … and small busnesses and individuals will all appreciate the savings in simplifying and costly tax planning alone. The IRS work load would be reduced as their role would be looking at an individual’s postcard or online entry and they could focus on tax cheats, non-payers and corporate taxpayers, which by the nature of capital markets, still require some complexity. In order to function in our economy, business need to be able to borrow, invest and take risk. They need to offset potential losses with profit and be encouraged to expand — not penalized to do so. We all want jobs and a growing economy.

Currently I’m not convinced just lowing the corporate rate to 25% (still on the high side for developed nations) is enough to encourage multinational corporations to bring profits back to the U.S. that have been parked overseas due to favorable treatment, but do believe a more in-line corporate income tax rate would be a step in the right direction. Hey … we can always have a tax holiday for companies wanting add jobs or build facilities as a way to encourage investing in the U.S.

Give this some thought … and let’s see if something like this could gain traction?

An old amber fog light for a Mercedes diesel is not inexpensive

Posted By on October 15, 2016

MB300D_AmberFogLightOuch … the amber fog light in our 1982 Mercedes Benz 300D Turbodiesel shatter a couple weeks ago and I’ve been searching to find a Bosch replacement ever since. While looking on ebay, I was surprised not to be able to find a decent one for under $35 … that is a lot to spend for a used fog light! I finally decided that driving this autumn with out a bulb was not a good idea, so I coughed up $38.45 for a used bulb, but it wasn’t easy.

John Deere 330 Diesel 10K Generator project update

Posted By on October 13, 2016

JohnDeere330Diesel10KGen

After doing a little maintenance and replacing the front tires on the John Deere 330 last month, I finally finished the simple 10K generator setup and wired IMG_7686up a new longer power-to-house cable. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to come up with a mount that makes it easy enough from my wife to connect the generator head to the John GenCordEtc5Deere and then to the house, but it is still relatively easy (she could probably do it … but wouldn’t like doing it).

Setting it up is a matter of a single tensioner "thumb screw" that I ground in order to align the generator head and the single heavy Kevlar 5/8" x 43" belt. So far in testing it for a few hours, it runs the house without a problem (minus AC, electric range, dryer, etc), … and uses 1/2 gallon of diesel per hour running at mid-throttle –required RPMs for 120 VAC and 240 VAC. I suspect my calculations on burn rate could be off slightly, but have erred on the conservative side (planning for 5 gallons of diesel every 10-12 hours).
