Now that my Sprint Palm Pre phone number is my Google Voice number, GV is handling both the audio and text transcription of my voicemail messages. After recording and transcription, an email is sent to my phone as well as picked up by my email client (or on gmail) – also there’s a copy archived on the Google Voice site until deleted (but are any Google based messages ever deleted?) A month ago the Sprint/Google announcement sounded like it might be a good idea, but I’m starting to wonder if having messages beyond the control of a personal answering device or contracted cellphone company is a good idea?

Nevertheless, after getting my earlybird announcement email (below), I tossed my old Google Voice number deciding instead to use my Sprint cellphone number (truth be told, I have several GV numbers). Besides the well known issues of questionable transcription, the service is fast and so far free. Although I’m currently permitting all phone numbers to ring my phone, I’m looking forward to eventually screening some numbers, re-directing other straight to voicemail and maybe even eliminating nuisance calls … perhaps I should test that with my wife? (did I say that? For the record, she is never a nuisance!)

You have been invited to start enjoying the benefits of the Sprint integration before anyone else! We are interested in your feedback as we roll this out to the entire user base and have listed a link to a form where you can send feedback and/or questions.

There are two ways to enable the integrated service:

1. Option 1: Keep your Sprint number (all the benefits of porting without the need to). In this case, your Sprint number becomes your Google Voice number so that when people call your Sprint mobile number, it rings all the phones you want.

How to enable this: click on the "change/port" link next to your GV # in the settings page, choose the option to use your existing number, enter your Sprint number and select the Sprint option.

2. Option 2: Replace your Sprint number with your Google Voice number (all the benefits of the app without the need for one). In this case, all calls made from your Sprint phone will display your Google Voice # natively (same for SMS).

How to enable this: click on the "enable Google Voice on your Sprint phone" link next to your Sprint forwarding phone. If the link does not show, click on edit and use the link to verify whether your phone is eligible.

In both cases, Google Voice replaces Sprint voicemail (pressing one on your phone links you to your Google Voicemail) and international calls made from the Sprint phone will be connected by Google Voice. Integrating your account with Sprint means you will still get the benefits of Any Mobile Any Time if that is included in your service plan.

Important Notes:

• The integrated service only works with a valid Sprint mobile number.
• For this early release, Sprint support channels will not be available for support, including Sprint Retail Stores, Sprint Customer Care, Sprint Telesales, Sprint Direct Sales Reps, etc.
• If you need support, or have feedback, please fill out this form [link removed]
• If you use the Google Voice app on Android, you will need to log out and log back in to make sure the app stops using call interception.

Although I’m not a dancer and lack a voice worthy of praising God (but still believing my mouthing of words is appreciated Above), I do enjoy listening and watching those who do have rhythm and voices.

I do love the video going viral which was posted a few days ago from thousands of participates of Second Baptist Church in Houston Texas. Rise Up, Dance Your Shoes Off 2011 and celebrate our risen Lord and Savior this Easter.

Dance Your Shoes Off

More than 2,000 people from Second Baptist Church, Houston, Texas, gathered at Discovery Green in the heart of Houston to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. The purpose of Dance Your Shoes Off! was to proclaim the resurrection of Jesus Christ in a powerful and celebratory way. Most importantly, each participant left a new pair of shoes on the field for those in need. These shoes will be given to local mission agencies, including Star of Hope, individuals all across the world through our mission partners and mission trips.

With the upcoming royal wedding in England, I began thinking a little more about our genealogy again. A couple years ago, I used the limited free access to Ancestry.com to do a little history on my family tree. While doing it, I had a chance to connect with a few other distant family members by email, and phone, who were doing the same … actually they were a bit more serious than me. The other day one of them sent me an email asking if I knew about a Welsh ancestor, John Corbett a salt magnate. He purchased and unrelated ‘noble’ Corbet’s (one “t” who’s family eventually added a second “t” ???) estate where some of the Corbett family remained until it was used by allies in World War II … so I was told.

It’s an interesting additional piece of history … although it would be even more interesting to corroborate the family connection. The only previous information I have of my lineage was that our Corbett ancestor came to America in the mid-1800s. From what has been passed down, he came over as a mason who constructed lighthouses (word of mouth) and work his family over. Anyway the old drawing and new photos from Ynysymaengwyn in Tywyn, Gwynedd, Wales are interesting and I thought would post something here just in case there are any readers (or relatives) that can add or correct.

CONTEXT

Administrative and biographical history: The Ynysymaengwyn estate was owned by the Wynnes until the death of Humphrey Wynne (alive in 1570) when the estate passed to his daughter Elizabeth who married Sir James Pryse of Gogerddan, Cardiganshire. Their sole heiress was Bridgett Pryse who in or around 1612 married Robert Corbet of Moreton Corbet, Shropshire. The eldest son and heir of this marriage was Vincent Corbett who apparently disinherited his son Thomas Vincent Corbett so that the estate passed to his sisters Ann, who married Athelstan Owen of Rhiwsaeson, Montgomeryshire, and Jane who married, firstly, Thomas Price of Esgairweddan and, secondly, Hugh Wynn, rector of Dolgellau. There were no heirs from either of Jane’s marriages. A year before her death, Ann Owen settled the Ynysymaengwyn estate, which by now included the Caethle estate in Tywyn which Ann herself had purchased from Richard Braithwaite and Margaret his wife, to her second son Richard Owen, Corbett Owen her eldest son having already died without issue. Richard Owen also died without issue so that the estate devolved upon his sister Ann Owen. She married Pryce Maurice, owner of the Lloran estate, Denbighshire, in 1740. In accordance with the terms of a deed of settlement of 1758 and the will of Ann Owen the estate passed to Ann Owen’s grandson, Henry Arthur Maurice, that is the third son of the marriage of her daughter and namesake and Pryce Maurice. Henry assumed the name of Corbet on inheriting the Ynysymaengwyn estate. He died aged 30 in 1782 and was succeeded by his brother Edward Maurice. He likewise assumed the name Corbett. Following his death in 1820 the estate passed to his nephew Athelstan Maurice, who also assumed the name Corbett. He died in 1835 and was succeeded by his daughter Henrietta and her husband John Soden of Bath who likewise assumed the name of Corbett. His son, a deeply indebted Athelstan John Soden Corbett, finally decided to sell the estate, which measured 9,347 in 1873. The entire estate was sold between 1877 and 1879, the main purchaser being John Corbett, MP, (no relation) of Droitwich, Worcestershire, who bought Ynysymaengwyn mansion, demesne and pleasure grounds for £42,000.

Not wanting to let this little bit of poetry disappear, I’m archiving it to my blog for both for posterity and pride (I made my daughter Katelyn record her poem – below). Although I’m not sure who the ultimate reader or listener will be, I’ve got a feeling that those attending medical school or young doctors in their residency will likely relate to ‘The Process.’

For those of us reading this from outside the medical profession, each verse covers a year of study/work after students and new doctors begin to interface regularly with real patients … rather than drudgery of books, labs, cadavers and ‘pretend patients’ (M1 and M2 years are heavily lecture, book and lab learning). Once a medical student passes the stressful Step 1 exam, usually at the end of of their M2 year, most begin a daily interface in hospitals and offices with real patients. I know the poem will remind those who have earned the “white coat” of their hard work, not only during their years of formal schooling, but in spending long hours, barely scraping by, during their three or more years of residency, not to mention a possible fellowship.

The Third Year Medical Student

Crisp white coat,
Pockets full of neatly folded notes.
Pen light, eye chart, stethoscope.
Stiff, smells of new plastic.
Brain ready, streaming with information from Step 1.
Eager, willing, excited.
Your first pager!

The Fourth Year Medical Student

Dull white-ish coat,
Ink spotted pockets with dog-eared lecture notes from three months ago.
Pen light dimming, need new battery.
What happened to that eye chart?
Stethoscope hangs comfortably, smells of many patients, not enough disinfectant.
Adjusted, tainted, ready.
Why don’t they page me!

The Intern

Longer white coat, just more to get dirty.
Pockets filled to maximum capacity with
Formulas, diagnoses, a student’s eval here,
A short presentation on hypertension there.
Pen light broken, no batteries.
What eye chart? The nurses do that.
Only a stethoscope, hangs limp and used
Run ragged, brain filled, but never knowing enough.
Stop beeping!

The Resident

The white coat is lighter,
Only a few staple resources plus your brain.
Pen light disappeared, stethoscope an extension of self.
Confident,
Until,
That one patient, seemed cut and dry,
But wasn’t …
A little oversight, a simple mistake,
Fortunately the attending was there.
Beep … Beep … Sigh …

The Attending

The white coat is dry-cleaned, crisp, heavier than remembered,
Maybe the weight of responsibility?
A new pen light, new batteries,
A lesson learned from residency.
Tried and true stethoscope, comforting, like a child’s teddy bear.
Teacher, student, learning, always learning.
Beep-beep … Beep-beep … Check pager … it’s someone else’s pager.

I’ve enjoyed my older Anniversary Edition Eye-Fi SD card for a couple of years now and have appreciated the way it uploads photos to my waiting computer via my home wi-fi access point. I’ve been watching Eye-Fi innovations and have often thought how much much more convenient it would be to have photos uploaded directly to a computer “in the field.” If I were a tablet computer owner, it might even be better to have a slim, high quality screen to carry in my camera bag in order for my aging eyes to flip through recent photos. Looks like that’s exactly what the X2 card can now do with Direct Mode and the iPad, iPhone or Andriod smartphone (video below).
