A dab of epoxy and a neodymium magnet can be like magic

Posted By on March 6, 2019

DadCToolBoxRepacked190129Back on what would have been my dad’s birthday, I posted a photo of my new Ridgid work light hanging on his old toolbox. The toolbox was one of those items of my dad’s that both my brother and I wanted when we were going through our parents belongings – I ended up with it.

I’ve repacked my tools in it several times now, just to get it sorted the way I like, but on thing has bothered me was the way the latch hangs down in front of the top drawers. I finally got around to adding a  couple tiny neodymium magnets … which I’ve been using all over the place nowadays. Just add a little epoxy and voilà … they hold things in place.

Give them a try if you need to keep a tools from vibrating loose or a part where you can get at it easily. I may need to purchase a few more pretty soon!

The six degrees of separation theory strikes again

Posted By on March 3, 2019

IMG_3338But before the “six degrees of separation” reference (see below), how do you stack up to the WSJ survey of “workers benefiting from a strong U.S. labor market?”

IMG_3339

One thing that seems to remain consistent over the years is that an education benefits you when it comes to jobs and compensation in the long haul, so take advantage of this in high school, college or graduate school (but be smart about your field of study and how much debt you ring up). Here’s a “How America Works”  special section in the WSJ.

Now for my “six points of separation” moment …

775287085AT00074While reading through the Cincinnati Reds spring training news in preparation for the 2019 season, a single Reds tweet caught my attention (below) “I recognize that players last name,” I thought to myself? Wouldn’t that be interesting if Kyle Wren was related to a minor leage baseball player that my wife dated. So I asked Brenda“what was the baseball player name that you dated?”  It was Frank Wren, and he is the dad of the player I noticed competing for a spot on the Reds roster this yearwho also has a twin brother who plays baseball, Jordan Wren. Wow … what a small world.FrankWren-BostonRedSox

Well, for now let’s hope Kyle gets a spot on the roster (although not sure we need outfielders). If he does, I’ll be following him a bit closer and maybe we’ll even make it to a few more of games this year. As Brenda commented, if he does make it, we should invite his parents to come to Cincinnati and watch a game (although from the looks of it, his dad may be a bit too busy with his Boston Red Sox duties. Who knew, he’s been in baseball his whole career!)

Tech Friday: The Wayback Machine and Cincinnati Style Chili

Posted By on March 1, 2019

CincinnatiChiliThis is an unusual Tech Friday post, but after being frustrated this week in clicking a dead link to an article that disappeared after a website was updated, I decided there must be a better way to ensure information, links and websites remained useful … WITHOUT having to archive them entirely on my computers, servers or cloud spaces. Of course there is, but what I didn’t know is that with a virtual library account we can all contribute to archiving articles to the Internet Archive Wayback Machine (previous post).

The test of the Wayback Archive waswayback-toolbar-logo to save a WCPO article and graphics about Cincinnati Style Chili that I found interesting — as an aside, instead of the expected German influence to this Cincinnati “cuisine” – for outsiders, I’m using the word “cuisine” liberally (noting that some call Cincinnati Chili “diarrhea sludge or garbage gravy”) — KiradJieffBrothersChiliit is really Americanized Greek Stew?

Pres Trump meets Kim Jong Un in Hanoi for second summit

Posted By on February 27, 2019

WSJ_WhichStoryWouldYouLeadWith190227As far as news goes, one would think that the biggest news of the day would be a second summit meeting between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump. It was only two short years ago that “little Rocket Man” was firing missiles over Japan and testing his nuclear weapons … and now we’re “at least” on friendly speaking terms talking about disarming, a actual ending of the 1950’s Korean War and the possibility of better relations between this rogue regime and the civilized world.

BUT, no … the American media (including the WSJ) is more interested in the salacious testimony of Michael Cohen … someone already who has already been disbarred and convicted for “lying under oath.” It is all news, but the wrong story is headlining the newspapers IMHO.

It is disappointing we are more interested in an ex-lawyer spilling the dirt on his previous client that deterring the build up of nuclear tipped ICBMs. What does this say about gossip, the hatred of Donald Trump or our legal system we once thought respected attorney client privilege?

Creative bindery guy sets his machine up to fold paper airplanes

Posted By on February 27, 2019

Since printing presses (and bindery equipment) is in my DNA, I can’t help but have a soft spot for this guy tweaking his equipment to spit out paper airplanes. Personally I would rather … and remember many-a-late nights … calculating $$$ as our sheet-fed offset presses mesmerizingly crank out piles of paper. 🙂

Where do you do your best thinking? In the shower? #humor

Posted By on February 26, 2019

SliverOfSoap_thumb[17]Wintertime offers longer days for reading and thinking and some of my better thoughts happen during my morning shower … although other thoughts aren’t quite so inspirational or deep …like, “Why can’t the sliver of soap be as invigorating as that larger new bar? Do soap manufacturers purposely make the inside of a bar of soap so we become so discontented that we replace it before it has fully been used?” Hm, perhaps my “better thoughts” don’t really happen in an early morning shower?
