Happy Independence Day 2019 – tainting another symbol

Posted By on July 4, 2019

Delaware_crossingMost Americans love their country and enjoy celebrating our country’s “amazing” 243 year history and success. We are thankful for the rag-tag group of patriots from the 13 original colonies who boldly fought for their independence from Great Britain. In school, my generation (and previous) learned about our forefather’s near impossible struggle for freedom and their aspirational desire to build a democratic republic. The praise was for what they achieved and not for the colonists’ shortcomings.

Today, instead of honoring and appreciating what these patriots got right in founding our country, some spend an extraordinary amount of time on our predecessors’ wrongs. Yes we need to know history and learn from it, but not weaponize it. Each time I think the next generation is going to be able to put our nations’ transgressions behind us … be they the Oppression of Native Americans, Slavery, Civil Rights, Woman’s Suffrage, Japanese-American Interment, Jim Crow/Segregation, etc … there are inciters who take every opportunity to inflame the issues (many who benefit politically or financially). This keeps yet another generation from achieving Dr. King’s goal of racial and color blindness, something I thought my generation would advance (but to “focus on the positives,” we have … considering citizens did elect President Obama).

NikeBetsyRossShoes_190704Still … another story from the “NFL star turned-activist” Colin Kaepernick once again put the focus on the “wrongs” associated with our countries 243 year old independence movement. He has a problem with our country’s 13-starred flag that a Nike was planning to display on a July 4th sneaker. On the heel of the shoe was a Betsy Ross American Revolution flag – yet with a phone call from Kaepernick, Nike has decided to pull the sneaker. What’s next … social media banning that flag because it is not considered “racially charged?”

Once again, we Americans are taking the bait as activists inflame the issue and widen the divide. We all know activist and politicians who have built their their entire careers fanning the flames rather than working to reinforce and recognize our gains. Kaepernick and Nike may be the latest provocateurs, but they are playing the same game.

Nike is yanking a U.S.A.-themed sneaker featuring an early American flag after NFL star-turned-activist Colin Kaepernick told the company it shouldn’t sell a shoe with a symbol that he and others consider offensive, according to people familiar with the matter.

The sneaker giant created the Air Max 1 USA in celebration of the July Fourth holiday, and it was slated to go on sale this week. The heel of the shoe featured a U.S. flag with 13 white stars in a circle, a design created during the American Revolution and commonly referred to as the Betsy Ross flag.

Our countries founders and past presidents, no matter their political party, would be “turning over in their graves”

Joe-Biden-Bernie-Sanders-Kamala-Harris-820x500
VP Joe Biden, Sen Bernie Sanders and Sen Kamala Harris – DemDebate2 6/27/2019

After watching the two night Democratic Debate last week, I couldn’t help, but notice that the socialist wing of the party has moved every candidate WAY left. All of the current 20+ candidates running to be the DEM’s nominee have made previous Democratic presidents look moderate, including President Obamaor made some even look conservative – President Kennedy from my memory.

DEMPresidentialField190625

It will be quite the nomination process in watching each of these Democrats trying to "out progressive" each other … and then have to shift "somehow" in the general election in a way that doesn’t look phony. How will the patriotic blue-collar traditional Democrats be able vote for any of these candidates … or for that matter, how can a Never-Trump voter stand by and watch their country turn into a socialist state

We live in interesting times.

(Side note: etomology on the phrase “turn over in their graves“)

A Nobel Peace Prize in President Trump’s future? #sarcasm

Posted By on June 30, 2019

In 2009 President Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his "extraordinary effort" … one can’t help but wonder if nominations and the Nobel Committee is going to equally as fair to President Trump? I’m not holding my breath.

After spending a few days on Put In Bay last weekend, I knew there were a few May Flies around (sold all my MayFly lures)but had no idea there were this many! Katelyn sent me a shocking link with a few social media photos (and radar) from where we park our car. Ugh … and I thought the Florida LoveBugs were bad!

Tech Friday: Limiting how much data Amazon Echoes collect

Posted By on June 28, 2019

Unfortunately I’ve bought into – or was “gifted” into 🙂 – BUT really enjoy the Amazon Echo smart speaker virtual assistant devices. I know Alexa is “always listening” (as is my cellphone, iPad, computers, etc) and that they are doing “who knows what”with my data, but probably not always what I want. Obviously, they dissect and analyse what is being said for marketing purposes, just as Google does with my search history (although I try to use DuckDuckGo.com) … but we get mixed signals as to what is being tracked, harvested, kept for profiling and being sold to others (yikes).

A Phys.org and USA Today does a decent job of reviewing the conundrum being faced by users who appreciate the tech conveniences, but question the amount of data Amazon needs to archive on not just the willing buyer of the Echo, but every person (minors, guests, pets, etc) that set foot in your home. At this point, Alexa doesn’t differentiate … she just listens and “feeds the beast” that is Amazon. All others competitors are likely doing the same to one degree or another — it is still the Wild West when it comes to privacy.

Here’s how to stop at least the tracking (read full article here)

First of all, Amazon’s tracking defense is that by knowing your location, it can deliver products to your home faster. "For example, if we know your preferred shipping location, the specificity of our predictable shipping is really amazing," amazonalexaAmazon said in a statement. "Customers may see a message like, ‘if you order in the next 2:27 minutes, you will get this by tomorrow.’"

To stop Amazon tracking, begin by wiping out your browser histories. This setting is in tools; in Chrome, you click the three dots in the top right corner, go to More Tools, then Clear Browsing Data. This click will wipe out your browsing history, stored passwords and cookies. You’ll have a lot to input again after you do this. For instance, stored URLs and sign-ons will be wiped clean. So make sure you know your passwords or have them stored somewhere else before you do it.

Archive: Found a couple CPP photos when cleaning my desk #TBT

CPPBuildingW1987CPPBuildingE1987

While cleaning out a few old files folders, I came across a couple Consolidated Printing and Publishing Co. building photos in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio that my insurance agent took and included glued onto a policy folder. They are likely from the late 1980s and are worth archiving and using for a Throwback Thursday #TBT post. The photos were of the building we bought in 1986 and taken after remodeling (here is a relatively current and early pre-remodeling photos). Good memories, but leaves me a bit melancholy.
