Once upon a time I drove a couple 1980s Chevrolet Celebrities

One of these days I’m planning to archive a post that summarizes all the cars I’ve owned. One that I had forgotten was a favorite "company supplied car" when I worked in purchasing and sales at Knight-Ridder/Portage Newspaper Supply out chevrolet-celebrity84of Akron, Ohio in the early to mid-1980s.

The first car was a white Chevrolet Celebrity but the second a sportier gray Eurosport Celebrity. What a great company perk for a young married couple with a baby who lived 4 hours from grandparents. Since we drove through Lima Ohio, I’m glad we didn’t cross paths with a one of the tanks built there!

Relocated the magnetic phone holder in my BMW X5 35d

Posted By on September 15, 2017

NewPhoneHolder170915In anticipation in receiving new iDrive display and components from a "group buy" on the BMW diesel group I belong to, I made a new CD/DVD slot bracket for the previously installed Nato Smart Mount. The previous location was fine for the older small iPhone 5s, but after updating to the much larger iPhone 7 plus, it wasn’t all that easy to use … but that aside, the eventual new higher resolution and larger iDrive display will take that space (stay tuned).

The new homemade aluminum bracket fits into the "rarely used" CD/DVD slot, but will come out as needed IF the slot is required. For now, the iPhone 7 plus is much sturdier to the touch when on the magnetic mount since it also rests against the dash (we’ll see how the wiggling is later as I’ve not taken a trip with it yet). About my only real concern is that my rather tall wide mouthed Klean Kanteen stainless steel water thermo may not fit in an out of the cup holders under the mounted phone? Coffee cups, cans and 16 oz water bottles are fine, but the 10-inch tall insulated container is too large … but I usually toss it in the door pocket anyway.

I’ve rerouted my Apple lightning charger cord temporarily since I also opted for the add-on Apple CarPlay adapter in the "group buy" in order to interface the iPhone to the new iDrive display (should be here soon) because it requires a plug connection – will not function fully via wifi or bluetooth. Hopefully the extra dollares will be worth it, but it may be more of a limiting nuisance than useful add-on?

An interview with Dr Francis Collins triggered a book order

Posted By on September 14, 2017

220px-Francis_Collins_official_portraitWhile driving this week I had a opportunity to scan through a few SiriusXM stations and picked up on part of a Bloomberg interview between philanthropist David Rubenstein and National Institutes of Health director Dr. Francis Collins (looked up the video so I could listen to the entire interview later – below).

Dr Collins seemed extremely bright and humble … and quickly captured my interest … and even more so when talking about how he came to Christianity. Like CS Lewis, Ron Carlson and Lee Strobel, the story was even more intriguing coming from such a bright scientist. So much so that I ordered a hardcopy of his 2006 book, The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief, just so Dna-splitI can lend it out.

I’m sure I’m not the only Christ follower who appreciates well respected doctors and scientists that are comfortable embracing faith and having a willingness to publicly share it … at risk of being academically ostracized. If someone as brilliant as the guy who heads the 20,000 people who research at the NIH, under both Democrat and Republican presidents, and previously head of the Human Genome Project to its completion, concludes there is a God and Christianity makes perfect sense to him, then I shouldn’t stumble when belittled by academics and science types wondering how I could have faith in an unseen and unprovable God of the universe (hence "faith"). It is far easier for those of us who are not PhD science educated to defend our faith knowing we are in such bright company knowing there are a few science geniuses following Christ too.

What about buying the new $1000 iPhone – is it worth it?

Now personally I don’t have a need for this new latest and greatest iPhone, but know many of my fellow Apple gadget addicted friends will definitely find a way to scrape up $1000 to buy the iPhoneX (ten) whether they need a new phone or not. The smartphone has become the clothing accessory or jewelry item people adorn themselves with … and frankly is much cheaper than an expensive “jeweled” watch, diamond bracelet or pendant. In that kind of comparison a item you use 3 hours per day (national average) is easily worth $1000.

iphones2017

In comparison to “my” early computer days, it wasn’t uncommon for the basic personal computer to cost over $2000 and have roughly the same technological lifespan as a smartphone with far less capability. I also know from personal experience that some of us have closets full of old computers, expensive suits that we “might” wear once a year … or specialty tools in our workshops that we only occasionally have need for … cough, cough – my Lincoln TIG welder.

So buying the latest and greatest Apple iPhone is probably not the worst purchase you can make … if you want it, order one … and help Apple become the first $1 Trillion dollar company.

Irma makes landfall in Florida 1st in the Keys then Marco Island

Posted By on September 11, 2017

ABCNewsIrmaBy now those turning on the TV to watch updates on Hurricane Irma are tired of seeing news reporters heading out into 100+ mile per hours winds and pelting rain — enough already!

Still the destruction and danger are sickening especially in the areas where building codes are not what they are in the US. The Caribbean Islands and 3rd world countries are truly fortunate to have come away with their lives.

Obit: The passing of an old friend and customer, Larry G Hart

Posted By on September 10, 2017

Larry G. Hart, 81, former longtime resident of Cuyahoga Falls, passed away on Friday, September 8, 2017, at Copeland Oaks Crandall Medical Center, in Sebring, after a lengthy illness.

Larry graduated from South High School, earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Akron, where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, and later completed a Master’s degree at Kent State University. Early in his career, he taught elementary education in the Akron area and then was the reading specialist at the Youth Development Center, in Hudson, for several years. He made many friends while working part time at the YMCA and Falls Natatorium.

Larry served in the Army Reserves, and he was an active member of Faith United Methodist Church. A man of many talents, Larry played piano and organ, loved photography, and traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad. As a snowbird, he enjoyed strolling the snow white sand beaches of the Florida panhandle. Larry was intrigued by how things worked, and he designed and built a vacation cottage. He was a collector of reed organs and a member of the Reed Organ Society. A real “people” person, Larry had the ability to find a connection with almost anyone he met. His friends were legion and covered the spectrum from young to old.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Marion M. and Belva (Steinmetz) Hart. He is survived by his sister, Linda (David) Workman; niece, Amy (Jared Grosinske) Workman; and his nephew, Jon (Kim) Workman and their children, Hannah, Ethan, and Lizzie.

A debt of gratitude is owed to the caring staff of Copeland Oaks and Crandall Medical Center and to the loving support provided by Crossroads Hospice.

Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, September 11, 2017 at the Adams Mason Funeral Home, (791 East Market Street), where a memorial service will immediately follow at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to , Grand Central Station, P.O. Smarter investments than solar energy for most homeowners

Posted By on September 10, 2017

For homeowners considering energy use and investing in solar … take a look at these FIVE solutions first from nuwireinvestor.com (although still one of the best investments for your home is "insulation")

pink-insulation

Some of the smartest investments you can make in your home are ways to maximize the energy efficiency of your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. With a few repairs and new installations, you’ll find yourself saving money each month on energy bills. You’ll have a more efficient and comfortable home with lower bills, which makes for a pretty good investment.

A Tankless Water Heater

Use this infographic to consider investing in a tankless water heater as a way to use less energy and lower your bills. While a tankless water heater is a bit more expensive to install, you’ll save money because you won’t have to store hot water for later use. You’ll produce only as much hot water as you need, so you won’t waste energy heating extra water in a storage tank.

A Programmable Thermostat

You can use your thermostat strategically to save on energy expenses. Some rooms need more air control than others, and while you’re out of the house you won’t want to leave the HVAC system on full blast. If you’re keeping the same air control levels throughout the house and changing the controls every time you leave, you’re wasting money and time. Installing a programmable thermostat will let you adjust the air in different areas and set a timer for the most efficient energy use. Your bills will drop, and you won’t have the daily hassle with the thermostat.

Sealing

Improving your home’s sealing will not only decrease your energy bills, it’ll also reduce humidity, keep the structure secure, and improve indoor air quality. This will save you money down the road when it comes to structural maintenance and your respiratory health. Some repair options include caulking cracks in your home and weather-stripping moving parts like windows and doors. Limiting air flow between the outside and inside of your house will lower energy costs a great deal and keep your home comfortable.

Energy-Efficient Windows

Choose windows that will save you money in addition to bringing in natural light. Find the most efficient windows for your home based on your location, the directional orientation, and the way light filters in. You can get windows with more panes, non-metal frames, and glass with low emissivity to limit the heat transfer between the inside and outside. Upgrading your windows after sealing and insulating your home will be the finishing touch in maximizing energy efficiency for indoor air control.

Smart Landscaping

This infographic can help you use less energy with smart landscaping. Designing the plants in your yard to cast shade and direct cool breezes can help control the air outside your home. With cooler air hitting your house, you won’t have to use as much air conditioning to maintain the inside temperature. Investing in landscaping will improve your curb appeal in addition to minimizing HVAC expenses.
