Happy Mother’s Day to a couple of wonderful moms

Posted By on May 8, 2022

EllerieSwimLesson220507It is difficult not to recognize what great moms both MomC and MomH were to me … but since they are no longer here, I want to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to a couple of great moms — my wife Brenda and daughter Katelyn. They both have risen to the most important role of being "mom" to their children.

Yesterday Katelyn was busy taking Ellerie to her first swim lesson and Brenda with me enjoying a few days in Delray Beach vacationing and cleaning up the condo from our winter renters. All is good.

Delraywalk2beach220506A simple highlight from this trip was to try out our BeachBub umbrella gift from Katelyn and Drew. BeachBubUmbrella5star220505So far, we give it FIVE stars as it is by far the best beach umbrella we’ve ever had. I’ve come a LONG way from rigging up a sleeping bag off the side of my college era 1977 Honda Civic in order to offer a little shade for my college roommate Jerry Moody (light skin and red hair). I give him a lot of credit for spending a week after we graduated camping in Florida and hanging out on the beach in the hot sun. Great memories and Brenda and I continue to make them!

KDAE looking at their property prior to ground breaking

It is definitely spring and as with many growing families working hard and fortunate enough to be living in the United States, ours are pursuing the American dream of building or owning a home.

Katelyn and Drew sent perhaps a final undeveloped photo of their beautiful NW Ohio property on a wooded cul-de-sac. I say final MB300DTurbodiesel_WashAndReadyfor Summer2022"undeveloped" photo, because their have all their duck in a row to break ground and are slated next to start construction with their custom builder. We are anxious for them as it brings back our own "house building" memories from the 1990s.

Just to add another photo from last week to the blog archive, here’s one just after the inspired washing and polishing up of my 1982 Mercedes 330d Turbodiesel.

Tech gadget guy mixed with someone who likes knot tying

PalmUSBChargerThis is what you get when you continue to use leftover chargers from old phones (my Palm Pre) and continue to rely on sailing knot tying skills.

Really just a filler post for a Tech Friday after noticing just how unique the old Palm USB plug was in design and how I ended up fidgeting without thinking to keep the charging wire neatly out of the way.

I think I like this particular USB power supply because it fold and packs neatly in the bottom of my messenger bagand reminds me of an old favorite smartphone?

Books: “The House of Yan” by Lan Yan and personal tidbits

Posted By on May 5, 2022

Although I don’t know all that much more than what I read about China, the culture and history intrigues me. After moving to Sidney, Ohio in high school, Book-TheHouseOfYan-LanYan_sI felt like a fish out of water since most kids grew up in town and had gone to school with each other their entire life. When it came to “fitting in,” I made a few close friends for the few kamikaze_vw_bug_1977 of years that I lived there and the majority of them were transplants too.

One of them, Charles Matthews, had moved a few times and lived overseas with his family where his father was teaching – previously Japan. I enjoyed the Asian culture that Kamikaze (as we called him) was able to bring from his years out of the country and out of curiosity more than anything, it triggered my reading and discussing Asia culture and politics with him. He was also a devout Socialist or more appropriate .. MoaZedong_Wikipediaa political Marxist. Charlie was a little late for the counterculture, but enjoyed  wearing a Mao Zedong hat and not fitting in with small town rural American, I figured it all was just being a teenager. But for Charlie, this philosophy continued after high school, college and grad school. Eventually he moved to China for several years, taught English in a city of 9 million people, wrote me regularly, was sick all the time, lost 20-30 pounds and eventually was booted out  of the country because he was an American … this after the Tiananmen Square uprising.

Over the years of correspondence with Charlie … as well as having a bit of personal curiosity … I continued to read and pay attentions to SE Asia … China, Japan and Korea … and study 20th century history that influenced this populated area of the world (mostly World War II, Korean War [my dad] and Vietnam War history). So when this book recommendation arrived via WSJ+, I decided to start reading it.

The House of Yan is  by entrepreneur Lan Yan and she traces her family’s history through early 20th Century to present day.

The history of the Yan family is inseparable from the history of China over the last century. One of the most influential businesswomen of China today, Lan Yan grew up in the company of the country’s powerful elite, including Zhou Enlai, LanYanHPportraitDeng Xiaoping, and other top leaders.

Her grandfather, Yan Baohang, originally a nationalist and ally of Chiang Kai-shek, later joined the communists and worked as a spy during World War II, never falling out of favor with Soong May-ling, aka Mrs. Chiang Kai-shek. Lan’s parents were diplomats, and her father, Yan Mingfu, was Mao’s personal Russian translator.

In spite of their elevated status, the Yan’s family life was turned upside down by the Cultural Revolution. One night in 1967, in front of a terrified ten-year-old Lan, Red Guards burst into the family home and arrested her grandfather. Days later, her father was arrested, accused of spying for the Soviet Union. Her mother, Wu Keilang, was branded a counter-revolutionary and forced to go with her daughter to a re-education camp for five years, where Lan came of age as a high school student.

In recounting her family history, Lan Yan brings to life a century of Chinese history from the last emperor to present day, including the Cultural Revolution which tore her childhood apart. The reader obtains a rare glimpse into the mysteries of a system which went off the rails and would decimate a large swathe of the intellectual, economic and political elite country. The little girl who was crushed by the Cultural Revolution has become one of the most active businesswomen in her country.

In telling her and her family’s story, Lan Yan serves up an intimate account of the history of contemporary China.

Archive: Guest bedroom and home office floors are finished

Just archiving progress on the hardwood floors project before moving any furniture back in the guest bedroom (above left) and my home office (panorama photo below).

I also wanted to save a photo of the can of Minwax branded wood finish, used and mixed to match our existing floor stain (great job by Schindler Hardwood Inc). As for the polyurethane, as Brenda kept saying, the satin finish is a “50/50 blend so as not to be too shiny.” Now to figure out how to keep from scratching it up … especially moving file cabinets back in my office!

Another colonoscopy and laughing at my old heartbeat theory

Posted By on May 3, 2022

My dad was known for saying he was planning to live to 160 years old and I’m following in his ridiculous longevity theories and his questionable HeartRatesFitbit220429medical advice (he died at 86 in 2015). Years ago I jokingly theorized that when Jesus told us thatIndeed, the very hairs of your head are numbered” (Luke 12:7) … then it was obvious to me that indeedthe number of heartbeats are numbered as well. Thankfully that number would only be known to God, but I’ve always pondered wasting “beats” and trying for a little less stress in life and embracing more laid-back relaxation.

Now that I’ve been wearing a Fitbit Versa for years (above), I have a pretty good idea how rapidly I’m churning through beats … and know that they are limited. Even from a more medical science based perspective (and some personal experience), we know and understand that “mechanically” our self-repairing human body does wear out. Of course there’s the “aerobic exercise makes the heart stronger theory too.” 😉

Does a human heart have a finite number of beats?

ScienceFocusHeart

At an average of 80 beats per minute, most of us will manage less than four billion beats in our lives. But you don’t die because you run out of heartbeats – you run out of heartbeats because you die.

Among mammals, the number of heartbeats over the lifespan of different species is fairly constant. So hamsters’ hearts beat 400 times a minute and they live for about four years, which is 840 million beats, and an elephant manages 35bpm for 35 years, or about 640 million beats total. Those numbers are similar, but that’s just because animals with faster heart rates are also smaller and more at risk from predation and starvation. Their lifespans have evolved to compensate for this by reproducing early and often – they ‘live fast, die young’. Heart muscle can only repair itself very slowly, so eventually every heart will wear out but not after a specific number of beats.

Science Focus

My questionable heartbeat theory aside, I did finally get my pandemic delayed colonoscopy last month and the gastroenterologist gave me a better report than I was expecting … considering my previous two had a few polyps. So at least now he is comfortable moving my next colonoscopy out a few more years. So for now, it is back to keeping my heart healthy and cholesterol in check.

Music Monday: Dion – “Runaround Sue” #video

Runaround_Sue_-_DionToday’s Music Monday is a little bit before my time, but when hearing Dion DiMucci singing “Runaround Sue” on Varney & Co. FoxBusiness show’s segment bumper music last month, it caught my ear. For me, it triggered memories of my parent’s music … as it would have been their era. I would not be surprised if it were on of my dad’s Wollensak reel-to-reel tapes (I mentioned his Wollensak before … link).

Anyway, who doesn’t tap their fingers or toes when hearing “Dion” singing this 1961 Doo-wop Hot 100 hit?

James Garner’s TAG Heuer Carrera watch up for auction

As a James Garner fan and follower of his daughter Gigi on Twitter, I enjoyed a recent article highlighting raising money for animal welfare with his famous TAG Heuer Carrera watch (below). Earlier this year I was impressed with Grand-Prix-movie-posterhis daily driver, a 2009 Cadillac CTS 4-door sedan up for auction on Barrett-Jackson, raising $100,000 with his MAVROCK license plate. I was someone who grew up watching the Rockford Files and being envious of his driving skills and Pontiac Firebird. I’ll bet his watch goes for a pretty penny?

Since Brenda and I have been watching old movies this past year with our Hello Fresh dinner an a weekend movie, maybe I can talk her into watching Grand Prix?

Cincinnati Reds: Dad catches a foul ball while feeding baby

Major League Baseball is back. Last week, baby feeding did not keep this hardcore fan from from enjoying a Cincinnati Reds game and coming away with a souvenir. Perhaps the Reds could add him to their roster … they sure need some kind of spark.

Tech Friday: Is Y2K still going to be a problem?

Posted By on April 29, 2022

Win2000EmergencyRepairDiskWith Y2K in the past, I wonder if I still need to keep this 3.5 inch disk from a Windows 2000 emergency repair?

I suspect I can toss the disk since I don’t think I even have a 3.5” disk reader anymore … although in the pile of old computer gear … it is likely that I do!

While moving my office last week in preparation for new hardwood flooring, I’ve been trying to dispose of old and aging tech items and miscellaneous junk. One of these days I’ll do the same for our bedroom closet, the basement, garage, etc!
